keyhole protection

i have some new vintage cymbals, and one of them has the slightest hint of a keyhole. Is there any way i can prevent this from enlarging? some type of rubber grommet?

EDIT: i forgot to add the most important point, which is that the cymbal i'm referring to is a top hi hat cymbal

Don't bother with a grommet... you need a short piece of plastic hose over the centre tube of the holder. It should be no longer than the thickness of the two felt washers when they are compressed together. you may need to enlarge the holes in the felts but stretching them is usually enough. So with no more metal to metal contact, the cymbal should be fine.

I got one of these free with an order off ebay...I haven`t tried it yet...It looks like it would be a PIA to install..

Here's what I suggested... Never had a keyholed HH cymbal...

(Black mark on the tubing shows where the cymbal sits between the felts).. This centres the top HH more accurately as well.

Note the tubing shown has been on that holder for around 15 years...

Keyholes are simply the softer cymbal metal being worn away by the harder stand metal, where it makes contact. Change the dynamic of this contact by using something softer than the cymbal metal as a buffer, and there is no chance of a keyhole. If the cymbal was harder than the stand, there would be threads on why is my cymbal stand breaking off at the top! LOL

Heck, for a temporary quick fix, you could throw a couple wraps of electric tape on there and that would last for a little while.

Yep I do the same thing as Long John. I used a plastic marker cap. Cut it with a razor knife heated with a lighter...like butta. Mine is a Slingerland clutch. But same effect no matter which brand. Works great.
