restoration of vintage Premier kit

Loading...

Hi,

I have a kit that I've been told is from the 1960s. There are no badges on any of the four drums, but I identified them as Premier because of the hardware, bass tuning screws, and the bass pedal that said "MADE IN ENGLAND The Premier Drum Co Ltd Wigston, Leicester, England". I bought the kit without a Premier snare drum. The Premier drums are 14" x 20" bass drum (8 lugs), 15" x 16" floor tom (8 lugs), 14" x 14" floor tom (8 lugs), and a 8" x 12" rack tom (6 lugs)-(has been made to mount on cymbal stand, but I will come to that later). The drums have die-cast hoops with slotted tension rods.

Can anyone identify the era of these drums? Does anyone know how I can get badges for the drums that belong to the era of them?

They don't have any wrap or paint or anything like that on them. They are just natural wood. I'm wondering whether there is supposed be a wrap on them and need to know how to go about wrapping them (if they need it - Do they need it?).

The drums will have had a wrap at some point, I have a 60's premier kit which the wrap was removed from. I think some owners removed what they considered to be 'retro' wraps to update their drums. You can pick Premier badges and grommets up on ebay - there's advice on fitting them on the site.

Tama Superstar, 22, 22, 16, 14, 13 Desert Burst
Premier Genista, 22, 16, 13, 12 Black Lacquer
Premier Genista, 20, 14, 10 and snare Black Lacquer
Premier Resonator 22, 16, 14, 13 poly creme/black
Zickos 22, 16, 14, 13, clear acrylic and snare

without the original wrap, with extra holes, missing parts, rims added, without the badges... they're in bad shape that's what I meant!

Eh...but they are a nice little project. I agree, looks to me like someone removed the wraps and 'finished' them, themselves. But the lugs and hoops are there, tom legs and leg mounts....so really, that's the main stuff if the shells are in decent shape.

Extra holes ? Don't worry about extra holes. Just fill 'em...a lot of methods have been posted here.

Yes, badges, mufflers, and tom mount etc. are relatively easily attainable. Finding the original correct tom mount, IMHO, is even somewhat...optional...I mean, it'd be going the whole 9 yards, but it isn't necessary....

Where are you located ? If in US, drummaker.com, precisiondrum.com have great selections of wraps. You may wanna do some research, find out at least what the available colors were from this era of Premier, and pick one of those....

Any drum supply places in your neck of the woods ? I would suspect that there must be something in NZ or AU, Asia, etc. ?
