Ludwig '61 Pioneer snare

Thanks again for the help. I regret that $USD80+international shipping is lot for a small component like this so the knob is a better alternative.

On a separate note, as a conservationist it saddens me to see the same folk on Ebay dismantling old drums and selling them in parts just to increase their $ return. much nicer to keep them whole and maintain their authenticity. Just my 10c worth!

Thanks. I'll post the completed pix shortly as well as a nice 1960 6.5" Pioneer I've just finished.

Goes both ways. Sometimes we need that one part for a drum and in these cases its a win for everyone :) Too bad Thomann does not cary vintage gear :(

I take your point but in my case, if it hadn't been for someone canibalising the drum in the first place to sell the parts then I wouldn't need to source replacement parts. It's a different matter if a shell becomes damaged beyond repair. In that case it makes perfect sense to recycle the parts. But there are number of people out there who are buying perfectly sound vintage drums and stripping off all the hardware - even the badges and selling them piece-meal. It makes me sick.

Anyway, as promised here's a couple of photos of my two recent renovation jobs. The blue sparkle is a '61 pre-serial Pioneer which I bought as a bare shell (see photo) and built back up. The mahogany is a '60 6.5" transition Pioneer. It is completely original except that the varnish was very badly chipped so had to be sanded back to the base veneer and then recoated with 6 coats of satin varnish. Both drums have nickel over brass hoops and nickel hardware. Very pleased with the outcome. Both drums sound lovely.

You did a very nice job on both of those snare drums.

Thanks very much. One tip I have is that I use Mer paint restorer on the nickel parts. It is a VERY VERY mild abrasive rubbing compound, a bit like T-Cut. It removes that slightly hazy glaze that old nickel acquires over time and brings up a beautiful shine.
