Peeling Paint on Vintage, Ludwig Snare

From anxiousman

Gotta jump in here with what works for me. I use a red devil brand 1 inch scraper, kept sharp with a file, and a heat gun. Be careful with the gun, keep it moving. The paint will come off easily. Then I sand with 80, 120 then 220. I have a 1960 Pioneer that was factory white with the finish failing so I finally stripped it and low and behold, there's this beautiful figured maple veneer underneath the paint. Now it's varnished, beautiful.

Excellent, glad that works....good to know.

I agree w/ leray...it has no vintage value anymore (as a factory original duco-painted drum, that is; it certainly has value as a good vintage snare drum)...the paint job is too far gone.

Disagree.

I say leave it. Many Ducos I have seen have that flaking problem. I had a MINT trans badge blue and silver bass drum -beautiful drum. It kept flaking and flaking until it was about have "raw" maple. It's just the way some of them react. I think the wood shrinks and the paint dries beyond all dryness and then it just flakes. I sold it, but that drum was a killer. I wouldn't do a thing to it. Once you strip it or do anything "unnatural" to it, it won't be worth anything to a collector. If you don't do anything and just leave it alone, it will always retain it's value. That's my 2 cents, anyway.Burger Kin

...and there you have the 2 sides of the coin....

Devil's advocate says: It's more than flaking, it's gettin' naked all by itself...it'll get to that point eventually, anyway....
