Early 70's Ludwig Bearing Edge Repair

Loading...

Hello all!

Hopefully I can get some insight on this one...

I just picked up a 20/12/14 early 70's champagne sparkle with a downbeat snare and 60's Zildjian As. When I was taking a look at the bearing edges I noticed this issue (See picture link) on the floor tom and the rack tom. Other than that everything was in immaculate shape so I pulled the trigger.

Now my question is SHOULD I fix the bearing edges and if so how? I was reading through other threads looking for similar problems/solutions and it looks like wood putty might be one way to go. The other thing to consider is I am looking to resell the kit so I'm not sure if that will affect fixing vs not fixing.

Thanks!

Chances are that it came that way to reduce that famous Ludwig hump, if you mean the re-ring joint. If it`s not separating or loose, I would leave it.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Excuse the ignorance, but what exactly is the "Ludwig hump"?

I believe he is referring to where the wrap was tucked into the seem of the shell causing it to "hump up" a bit.

Yes, that`s the big hump. You also get a hump when your re-rings are not perfectly done.

Ah yes I see! These don't have a wrap in the seem it appears either does it? If the rings and shell are solid and the drums sound good I wouldn't touch them either.

Alright well correct me if I should move this to a new thread then...But does it hurt the value of the drums significantly?

I'm not a jazz player and prefer 22/13/16 or even a 24, so like I mentioned before I'm looking to resell. Everything I've had in my possession so far hasn't had a bearing edge issue like this, so it's new territory for me.

Look at it this way,....If you see repair, you think less value and low ball.

Leave the drums be and sell as is. Most collectors want them that way and the finish and sizes you have are popular.

Alright thanks everyone! I'm going to take this to another thread for selling/value info.

I really do appreciate the input!
