Sorry for the loss to both of you. I'm currently in throes of being executor of my cousins estate. I must sell her beloved car and it is tough knowing how much she loved it. But I'm out of state and she has no other heirs interested.

If you are not a drummer, do you really think that your brother would expect for you to keep the drums that would never get played? If he were still living, and would no longer play them, what do you think he would do with the drums if he didn't hold on to them for sentimental reasons? For conjecture, let's assume that he would not hold on to them. Would he sell them? My recommendation would be for you to put pictures of these drums, pictures of your brother, and pictures of your brother with the drums (if you have any of those) in a nice book of memories. Then, offer the drums and go-withs for sale at fair market value to help offset final expenses for your brother.
I slept on it and read all your responses. Thank you. You can't know what a help you have been. For now what I concluded is I don’t want to make money off of my brother’s drums. Not a dime. It would be a sin against music if that makes any sense. It is completely incongruous with my brother’s life and the love he put into those drums. He must have carted them to an awful lot of club dates. It would be easier to carry around a trumpet! For now at least I’ve decided to bring them to my home and stack them in a corner as a sculpture. In a stack they don’t have too big a footprint and they are beautiful to look at and I won’t have to keep paying for their storage. I’ve mounted the large cymbal on a stand and bang it when I enter the room. And I’d already decided to keep his drum throne as an extra seat.

Yes, Ploughman. The labels inside the 3 Rogers drums say 9/72 but do not say Fullerton. I always knew, in terms of quality, that Steve would have picked what he thought was the absolute best for his ear. He would not have compromised on that. This was probably his third set and final one. I think the '64 Ludwig snare was from a previous set when he played clubs in the South Bay of L.A.

I think you have made a sound choice. Again sorry for your loss and I think you will appreciate the kit and perhaps keep it in your family for many years.

It makes absolutely no sense but now I want to find a Rogers Dyna-Sonic COB snare drum in the same gloss black finish from 72-73 to complete his set.
I just checked ebay and vintage Rogers snares can cost as much as his entire set! Maybe I'll hold off on getting one.

There is nothing wrong with that drum. What you have is deteriorated foam weather striping that has fallen off the top head. Back in the 70s a company sold what was called Deadringers, a foam band that had a sticky side which was adhered to the head to eliminate "ring" from the drum when played. Just remove that, clean up the bottom of the head, and it is done.

Yes Ploughman. I am afraid to remove the drum head for fear I won't get it back on correctly. I suppose in mounting the head back on the drum after I clean up the inside would be like mounting a tire on a rim where you tighten the lug nuts across from each other rather than those adjacent to each other. Knowing nothing about drums I am guessing though. Both tom-toms have the same weather stripping come loose inside. I noticed one or two of the lugs holding the bass drum head in place are rusty and need to be cleaned up or replaced with new. When I bring them home, one at a time since I drive Mini Cooper, I'll look them over more closely. Mostly they just need a good cleaning. I wonder if it would damage the bass drum head to stack another two or three drums on top of it. I killed my own Djembe by leaving it tuned pretty tight and placing it under a window where the sun shone on it. It ripped the head right around the rim and it still needs repair.
