Vintage Rogers Drum kit

Loading...

My brother, a life-long drummer, played this Rogers kit with two Ludwig snares (64 Supraphonic with Keystone badge and 76 Supersensitive). Both snares measure 5x14". My brother passed away and left me his drums. They have been stored away inside his house in drum cases for years. I put them in storage because they take up so much room in my apartment.

I know just about nothing of drums and wish to learn about these. I would like to sell them rather than continue to pay the storage fees but I am unsure the best way to sell them and what they should bring.

I have all the cases for the 5 drums. A new-looking Pearl hi-hat with heavy 15" Zildjians; two 16" Zildjians (ride and crash) one 18" Zildjian (thin lettering); one 18" China (with turned up edges and 6 rivets for sizzle); and 1 magnificent 20" Zildjian (thin lettering) ride cymbal with 1 rivet. The last cymbal is heavy and continues to ring after being struck for 90 seconds if that helps.

I have serial numbers and badges for all the drums to help date them.

For a guy who knows nothing about drums, I give you props on Supraphonic, Supersensitive, Keystone badge, 5 inches, china, rivet sizzle, Zildjian w/thin lettering.

aprox. 1500-2000 as a unit. 2000-2500 set of drums, piece the rest.

Condolences on your brothers passing.

My own brother died on March 6th.

I did some research on the net to understand just exactly what he has here. Rogers and Ludwig and Zildjian are pretty well-documented on the Net. From their badges and serial numbers I was able to get close but there is still so much I don't know about them. He played this kit in with various bands of his in the South Bay of Los Angeles for 20 years. He played with Tommy Carlough at the Sands in Torrance in the early 60's, before the Beatles. It was my brother that took me to see A Hard Day's Night and introduced me to the Beatles. After that our lives diverged when I moved to San Francisco. These drums have probably not been played in 20 years. The green felt mufflers inside the tom-toms has deteriorated while in storage and are loose inside.

I am not sure if his Ludwig snares are brass over chrome but plan to take a magnet to the storage place tomorrow and find out. The Rogers are all speckled paint on what looks to be fiber-board of some kind. But the snare drums are metal inside.

This set has not been played in a long time and I would like to see it go to a serious drummer. He has all the stands and two bass drum foot petals. I have decided to keep his drum throne for sentimental reasons.

Thank you Ploughman!

May your brother rest in peace.

Imagine the band they must have in heaven.

And all that music!

The Rogers will have paper tags glued to the inside of the shell.

The shells are five ply, maple poplar maple poplar maple. The tags will say Rogers Holiday with Dayton Ohio or Fullerton CA. They might also say Rogers Power Tone, Fullerton Ca. And they could be a smaller tag that says 9/72 Fullerton. I think yours are 9/72 Fullerton. the configuration of your bass drum is that of a Star Lighter IV, as shown in the 1973 Catalog by Rogers. The set would have included a Rogers Dyna-Sonic COB snare drum when new. They are quality drums.

Your Ludwig Blue Olive five inch Super Sensitive is from the 70s, before 78. The shell is Ludalloy, a Ludwig proprietary Aluminum alloy.

My brother had nothing when he died. I don't think I could do this. Good luck.

"I don't think I could do this."

Do you mean you couldn't sell your brother's drums?

I know my brother would have NEVER sold them.

He kept them for years in his house even though he could not carry them about any longer. As he got older he got tired of arranging all the band dates and then the arteries in his legs went out just like our father.

Maybe I should find a young person without many resources who is sincere about drumming and give them away. It's not about the money although I need to pay funeral expenses. But I want these drums to live out the life they still have in them. I want them to be part of making music again. I think they are a treasure and have considered how much I could make off them and then I see myself as a heartless opportunist and profiteer. What I really want is for them to go into the hands of someone who will make beautiful music with them once again. That would be my brother's wish too I think.

It is a hard decision, and can appreciate what you are feeling. And I know funeral expenses are a back breaker. There are a couple Rogers groups on facebook. Post it there also.

Sorry for your loss. Perhaps keep at least one snare for yourself as a memoir. They don't take up much space and can be passed down. To either a working drumming who appreciates vintage drums, a collector or an aspiring drummer the kit will be worth its weight in gold. I echo the thoughts of everyone else though if my family member passed and left me some of their treasure things I would have a hard time selling them.
