1966 slingerland floor tom Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Hello everyone. I'm having fun reading and learning from all. Thanks! I have a floor tom that is a Jan. 1966 slingerland WMP 20" and was wondering if any one know how this tom came to be. Can't find much info on the WWW about this thing. Have seen a few Ludwig versions but never one like this. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Didn't Krupa's kit on the Slingerland catalog covers have one of those for a long time?

Yes Rob G. I'm pretty sure Kruppa played a 20" on the side. Found a cool photo of Gene, Teddy Wilson, and Benny Goodman reunion that looks like his 20" as well. I also have gotten a note from a local vintage shop in my area and they seem to think they were only an order option. Has anyone ever heard this.

Yes, the Krupa kits had one (check the catalog section of this site....get to it by going to the vintage drum guide links upper right of the title page) and I have also heard that Slingy would make custom requests.

That beast is worth a good $350 at least....

Thanks much for the info Jaye. I'm gonna lean toward factory special since each hoop does have the OEM pair of holes in them. I think these were for external mufflers if I'm not mistaken. But, this kit has an internal muffler. I think the hoops were left overs and the 20" probably stopped being an option when they ran out. Just a thought and something to ponder while I finish my java break. Thanks again and always a pleasure reading posts.

The little holes in the hoop are for a plate to put a Tempo King bass drum pedal on.

When Slingerland offered the Jet outit (I think it was called that...don't have my catalogs handy), it was offered with a metal bass drum hoop with a small plate that bass drum pedal would clip onto. That's probably where the hoop on this tom is from...

Your right on the money about the Jet kit Rich K.. I overlooked the metal hoops on the Jet at first. Thanks for the redirect.
