Star Drums...looking for a floor tom.

Loading...

Hi,

I know this is a long shot but I would love to find a floor tom to match this kit.

I bought this from a lady who's dad owned it from new...he played old time dance music around country Australia. It is a museum piece. Even has the original heads !!

Sizes are 22x14,13x9, and a 14x something snare. I'm guessing it was sold with no floor tom as they did quite often in those days.

I'm also interested in any info about this kit eg dates etc? I know Star was the precursor to Tama but what year would this make the kit?

I've seen plenty of Star drums in the US also but they seem to have different lugs to the kits here in Australia...this kit has the knock off Slingy lugs common to lots of MIJ kits.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Jim

My guess would be between 62 and 70, if it has re-rings that would narrow the range to the early to mid 60's I think.

I've recently seen 2 Star floor toms on e-bay, but none matches your kit :( If you still need the links though, I'd be more than happy to...

Hi there you have a beautiful blue oyster pearl kit. I own one also with the same badge and metal bass hoops. My set has the teardrop" lugs and dates around 1967. Does your set have reinforcement rings in it? It could be from the same year.

Currently my first set ever 1983 Pearl Export original owner. 2008 Grestch Catalina Maple, and a 1970 Star kit. Many snares including a big R Dynasonic.
Previous Rogers Holiday 12, 16, 20 and powertone snare.
Premier apk and Premier Cabria kits.

Hi,

thanks everyone. Yes it's a pretty rare looking thing. The Oyster is similar to a Luddy Blue Oyster...but green(er) The shells are thick Luan, silver painted inside. No re-rings.

I was looking through posts here and found someone with a Star kit looking for parts for their resto. (I've had another look and can't find the post again now)

I noticed the discussion about the tom arm being impossible to find. Unobtainium huh? Haha ha...Interestingly that member's kit looks exactly the same as another kit I have with the same offset, pointy lugs but same Star bits such as the Bass drum cymbal mount and triangular one-touch tom muffler...only thing is it's called a "Boston" kit out here. Only just realised they must be from the same factory. That kit is WMP and pretty complete too (without the bass cymbal arm though)

Would be great if I could find a triangular muffler for that one too haha ha !!

So I guess I'm pushing poo up hill to find a Star floor tom in this Green Oyster huh?

Cheers

I have the triangular one-touch muffler (to sell) - who needs one?

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Hey, Jim! Thanks to a member, I recently obtained the cymbal arm and attachment myself. My Stars are in the Vintage Drum Gallery, listed as Star Set in Turquoise Sparkle (or something like that). There have been changes since Ralf was so good to post the pictures for me but, basically it's the same kit. Great sounding drums!
