Brought these home last night! Sparkling Slings!

I am working on these drums today. Getting them stripped and cleaned up. Here is my theory on this edge of the 13". It looks like the plastic of the wrap is lifting like it got hot at some point. So I think someone must have set it down on something that got very hot in turn making the rim very hot and then causing this wrap to melt and lift. Im hesitant to do to much or pull the lifting plastic pieces off. I may just continue on the bass drum for now and get the hardware all cleaned up and then go back to this 13". It really isn't that noticeable when the rim is on so that is good.

What do you guys think?

Eric - That damage was done by jamming tight heads onto the drum repeatedly. It looks like somebody already scored a line into the wrap to remove the top 3/8ths" or so. My concern is the bearing edge on the drum. It looks very flaky and uneven. It might be worth your while to have the edges dressed, or re-cut (if needed,) just to make sure the drum tunes up well and plays the way it's supposed to.

Tight heads caused the damage on the edge of the wrap...

John part of what you are seeing that makes the edge look so rough is these were painted white on the inside. They didn't do a great job on this end. The edges are actually pretty smooth. I will try putting a head on here to see how she fits.

Thanks

Next time you're at Home Depot pick up some 00-00 steel wool and a small can of Bee's Wax! Go over the edges with the steel wool alone, then wipe on some bee's wax and rub it in with the steel wool. The bearing edges will be smooth as glass and heads will be able to tune up easily without any hang-ups on the edges. Heads will glide over the edges.

That drum is worth doing right!

Love em, I'm keeping an eye open for a floor tom for you.

John

PS - Just spotted this one!

Yesterday I was able to get the remainder of the shells stripped down and cleaned up. I still haven't used any product on the wrap to get it to really pop but they did clean up nice and look pretty good as is. There was some serious dust caked on them as shown on the 22" in the first pic.

The hardware is still soaking in evaporust. I need to invest in a machine!!!

Nice job Eric~! Those look like mahogany interiors? Wood looks darker than the re rings where the washers were inside the shells. Off hand I don't remember when the switch to maple was. Either way good stuff. And wow that 16" on EB is $$$$ yikes...... but guess it's a hard to find finish?

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Not the hardest to find but kinda hard to find...I wouldn't pay that much though...I think like $350.00 sounds a bit more like the market price.

That one on ebay is a purple flake as well. Mine has a gold flake. How many different flake colors did they use I wonder?

Talked to my guy at the music shop the the other day and he told me that he use to have a FT for like ten years and never came across a matching bass and tom for it so he decided to sell it. Of course thats just the way it goes.

Well I got these almost done yesterday. I need to do the bass drum hoops still and I need to get the pieces of inlay I have on after that. I have enough for about 1.5 of the hoops. I am still missing one spur so that's why I have my hoop mount spurs on there. When adjusting the tom mount one of the screws snapped so I need to replace that as well. Im more of a snare stand king of guy anyway. Im pretty happy with how these turned out. Would love to find a FT but Im not holding my breath!
