Old Handmade Italian Cymbal - Need Help Identifying

Loading...

Just bought this 13" cymbal for use as a hi-hat, pairs well with my Fusion Hats bottom. Gorgeous hammering, thick patina, medium weight. It bends just a bit when you press on the edges.

The guy at the store I bought it from said it was a "vintage Italian" cymbal. It does look like some Italian pies I've seen by the hammering, however there's no maker's mark or stamp of any sort on it. Anyone have any inkling of who might have made this? The hammer marks are much larger than most Spizzichinos I've seen, and it likely has too much patina to a Spizz anyway. Must UFIPs I've run across have been thicker than this. And I'd assume they'd be stamped.

Help2 !!!

That's a very old one in my opinion. When that was made UFIP didn't yet exist so we can rule that out right off the bat. And with no trademark impression on it, then the default setting automaticaly puts this one into the Ajaha catagory.

Italian cymbals that were maketed by the Gretsch Drum Co. go back to as early as 1915 and I believe even a little earlier. But Gretsch's Ajahas were not just from one manufacturer alone, but from at least 3 or more different ones over the span of about 60 years.

Is it common practice to hammer after lathing ? Because that`s what it looks like to me.

These are the manufacturing steps that Bosphorus uses:

Smelting

Casting

Rolling

Pressing the bell

Tempering

Piercing the bell and cutting round

Hard hammering

Lathing

Fine hammering

Shaving the edges

The hard hammering defines the shape, the fine hammering after the lathing refines the sound.

My reading and googling seems to agree with Ajaha being the likely brand. There's even a fairly similar looking one on eBay currently.

Thanks for the info!
