I found 8 mini lugs today, I knew I had them, just needed to locate them. I found 8 more for a reasonable price so now I have 16 mini lugs and 8 hole Ludwig snare hoops. Is it worth getting 4 more lugs and buying some 10 hole Gibraltar hoops to make it a 10 lugger?

Slingalud - Can't find it! I bought a new Mac about 6 months ago and I'm pretty sure it's on my old Mac hard drive somewhere. It's currently sitting in a closet. I'll try the Internet which is where I got it in the firsat place. Really good article. A 'little' technical but easy enough for a layman to follow. Lots of talk about vibrations and how they travel through different density wood etc. The part about the how size effects sound is the part I wanted to share. According to the eggheads, 7"x14" is the magic number for building a great sounding drum. Really interesting stuff especially if you're a drum geek like me.

Jeff - 8 lugs will make for a more 'open' sounding drum! 10 lugs is great for easy tuning and if you're looking for a more focused, drier sounding drum. A matter of personal taste.

I agree on the 8/10 statement. None of my snare drums are cranked up to Stewart Copeland spec, so 8-lug is my typical snare. And there is a connection with # of lugs and "drying out" the resonance, which is neither bad or good.

Well, since I already bought the 8 hole hoops and have 16 lugs I will probably go that way. Too bad I have to work on cabinets the entire weekend, bummer!
