Res Head Q

Just wondering if anyone has ever used a snareside head as a resonant head on rack and floor toms ? Share your thoughts ?

I am almost done renovating a Cleveland-Tag Rogers Holiday 3-pc in Mardi-Gras wrap (original) with B & B lugs.

After a 4-month wait, I finally rec'd the last of the B & B reproduction lugs I ordered from JP2 Creations....they have been coming in piecemeal, ever so slowly, since December....

All of the batter sides of the shells now have the strong, heavier-cast steel reporduction lugs. The original B & B's which were uncracked I have moved to the resonant sides of all shells, to keep the tension and stress off of them. I have also reinforced the interiors with cold-weld.

These old B & B's tend to crack under moderate and high tension...so besides the fact that, forever, the overally tuning of this kit wll remain on the low side, I wanna find the lightest res heads possible...it'd just make me feel more comfortable. At the moment I have a janky chinese cellophane-like head on the bottom of the rack, and an Evans 1-ply clear reso on the FT....but I still don't even feel calm about that.

Am just wondering if something as light as a snareside head (even an Emperor snareside) would make the toms go ring-crazy.....

Actually it would do the opposite that you would think. It actually would make the drum more dead because the head vibrations die out quickly. You can't go wrong with a regular ambassador weight head as a reso.

Actually, it would have the opposite effect. The thinner the head, the less the sustain. Thin heads have a higher pitch (read frequency) which has a substantially "thinner and faster" sound wave. If you use this thinner snare side head, it will not ring true. No amount of tension play will bring it to the point of woody resonance. Just a thought.

Interesting.

Remember, I'm not asking for reso head suggestions....I'm asking for a reso head which wouldn't require a lotta tension, for the sake of the health of those B & B lugs more than anything else. I would feel very "walking on eggshells" if I ever used a regula Amb on there.....it would be asking for trouble. I feel prickly enough using clear 1-plys...I still think they are too heavy.....

So, basically....an Emperor snareside might be a bit livelier reso than, say, a Diplomat snareside (?)

...or would that be like 6 degrees of separation...?

Might I suggest one of those animal skin heads. Earthtone makes 'em out of goat, I believe. They are thicker than snare side heads, but because they are skin, they will take less tension to get 'em moving. Something to consider.

I bought a lot of drum stuff from Craigs L. long story short he had Fiberskyn3 heads on all the resoante sides. Im thinkin about puttin em on the reso sides of my luddys, since they would be in thier vernacular, when i finally restore them! ha!

I have FA 3 top and bottom on my RB Gretsch and it makes those drums sing.
