Try calling Precision Drum about this wrap. They offer a "chrome"

wrap, but their website doesn't give any specifics on how well it

matches yours. Worth the inquiry.

And, jammin sam has a mirror wrap but he says it will scratch easy.

Just to be clear, Ludwig originally called the finish Chrome-O-Wood, hence the universally accepted name chrome over wood. But the actual covering is polished stainless steel - not chromed - and it's nothing like the chrome 'wrap' that Precision and others distribute.

I think your best bet will be finding an original drum, the alternative is custom fabrication.

Bermuda says it correct, the mirror stuff is cheep and that is that. But you if you love the drum enough to wrap it in polished stainless steel, it can be done. I bought some material from this place,,

http://www.shopstarlandmetals.com/contact-us.aspx

The metal was reasonable price. I had to take it to a metal shop and have it rolled into a cylinder.

Here is a thread I started on the drums,

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=28288

It was no big deal to drill the holes, slow speed with lots of pressure.

Only thing I did not like was the thickness of the metal made the drum heavier than it was originally. I got the thinnest stainless steel they had in a mirror/polished finish. It was beautiful!

Thank you!

that's interesting. so is the chrome(polished stainless?) then clear coated, which would explain why it always looks like shiney chrome? I sure thought the stainless finish and the chrome over wood finish looked a bit different. ive owned only the latter of the two..

As far as I can tell, the 'wrap' was polished, but I don't see any evidence of it being coated (judging by my recent pristine COW Power Factory acquisition:

I don't know if the SS shells were polished to the same extent, although they look pretty close:

BTW, that kick & floor tom were acquired separately, and are custom polished. You can see the difference if you look carefully.

In any case, they're not quite as shiny as a chromed finish. They would really gleam if they were.

Nice drums as always Bermuda!

+1 to what has been said above. The mirror wraps offered will probably look very similar and odds are, you may be the only one to know the difference. They are a plastic finish pretty much like any other plastic wrap and not any type of metal. They will indeed scratch fairly easily, but if you take care of your drums, that is probably not a huge issue. So it's a question of how authentic you need this to be and how much money you want to spend on it. Make sure you follow Jeff's excellent thread on fabricating and installing polished stainless before you decide to go that route.

I don't know about what others may have but my Chrome-o-Wood set (from circa 1973-74) is covered in chrome plated steel. Not polished stainless steel but regular mild sheet steel that has been chrome plated on one side. If you scratch through the chrome plating it will rust in that spot, just like a bumper on an old car. I'm not sure where you might find a similar steel product today but suspect it would be out there somewhere. The stuff that the wrap dealers sell now is plastic based and looks different.
