Snare maintenance

So I realized after my studio session that I had incorrectly attached my snare wires on a few of my drums. I had grown used to my stock Sonor snare wires. These have special channels that will allow you to thread anyway you please. However, a lot of my vintage drums and some with Puresound wires require you to thread them a certain way.

The snare and bass drum are really in my opinion the heart of your drum kit and you want these to sound great. I took sometime last night and tonight correcting any snare wires done incorrectly and also took the advice to wax my chrome drums. I thought metal polish would be enough but wow my chrome drums are now mirror finish after a nice coat of wax.

Now I just have to test drive my snares. Live I normally play my Benny Greb or SQ2 snares. I have a lot of shows coming up so I will be rotating my vintage snares through and getting an idea of their best uses.

I've seen the advice you link to discussed here on VDF before. As I remember, very few people agree with it.

The best advice in the linked article is that the coated wire that Puresounds uses can dig into some shells…but I want to say that the coated wire is great for metal shells where it won't be digging into any wood. But yeah, the article has the threading wrong. But there is good advice in making sure the snares aren't trapezoidal.

First I cleaned the chrome snares with my usual methods.

Then I polished with Wright's:

Followed by Mcguiars Deep Crystal Carnuba wax:

After applying the carnuba you can feel the difference with your hands or a polish cloth. I recommend this step now after other forum members suggested it.
