Ludwig Club Date Cymbal Holder problems

Loading...

I acquired a nice late 60s Club Date kit that I have torn-down, cleaned and polished. However, the cymbal holder off the bass constantly slips. I have the wing nut cranked but it still slips. Any ideas on how to cure this?

Check to make sure that the holes in the casting where the arm go through haven't been ovaled from years of use. If they are, this may be contributing to the problem. If not, its possible that the eye bolt inside the casting maybe worn out. Either way, if either condition, or both, exsist you'll have to replace the bracket or at least the eye bolt inside it. Ludwig still sells a version of the bracket new, but its not exactly the same as original. You could always swap the new style wing nut to the original style from the old one. The only giveaway that it is a new bracket would be the small notch on each end of the new casting for a modern memory lock, something that wasn't around yet when these brackets were originally introduced. Incidentally, I'd consider using one of these memory locks as it would help eliminate the slippage problem and its small enough to not notice until you are up close.

Could also be the threads on the post being worn away. Something is worn out, for sure. Either the post, the eyebolt, or the bracket itself. If the post is fine, then get a new bracket if you plan on using it. Hold onto the old bracket in case you ever plan on selling it.

thanks for the advice. I will check to see if the bracket is 'ovalized'. The post that goes in the bracket is a bit chewed-up but seemed like ther was enough ribbing to grip.

If need be, where would I find a new bracket from Ludwig?

You could try 2112online.com, or if you have a local music store that sells ludwig....

That's great advice, L.D. -I agree.

The old brackets seem to work okay for me but many people play more forcefully than I do. It kind of depends on the way you play; the angle you mount the cymbal and the weight of the cymbal, itself.

A word of caution: If you continue to torque down on that wingnut, you will eventually cave in the casting of the bracket. The casting metal is a lot weaker than the wingnut (or hexnut) and when push comes to shove, the bracket will lose! Sometimes, things just wear out and need to be replaced. Fortunately, brackets are still relatively easy to find.

The memory lock idea is the way to go.

Exactly. These weren't intended to take a 20" medium cymbal. I never put anything heavier than a 16 medium or 18 very thin on these. eBay also has them all over the place. Hopefully it's the bracket and not the arm, because a bonafide Luddy arm is expensive.

Bonham used a 24" ride on his, and it seemed to work fine for him.

I have some of these if you want one. I think they're around $20 a piece from Ludwig. I'll sell you a brand new, never used one for $15 if you want one. Just message me if so.

Greetings,

I had the same problem. The eyebolt was fine but the casing and the knurling was worn and beyond repair causing the cymbal to slip unless it was straight up and down. I temporarily fixed this by adding washers under the wing nut but that just increased the wear as time went on. I bought the "new" version the Ludwig L-1372 and it fits in the existing holes and works great. The small memory lock works great and you can position the cymbal at an angle without worrying about slippage. I haven't had anyone notice that it was not original to the kit as you don't see many drummers these days using a BD cymbal mount. Hang onto the old one just in case you ever sell.

good luck!
