Camco Question

Loading...

Does anyone have the spacing between the screws of the round lugs on older Camco's?

I have a Tama/Camco set that I bought months ago and started looking at it closely and noticed that the inside of the shells have a light white in the grain. I'm wondering if I got one of the leftover stock of Camco shells when they sold to Tama.

The lugs I have are not completly round, they are more like a square and circle attached.

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Camco lugs are 1 3/8" from one centre of the screw hole to the other. Is that the same as the TamaCamco ones?

Nope, these tom brackets are "Made in Japan" on the inside and measure 1 9/16" from center to center. Shells are still very nice, can't decide on whether to refurbish or sell......

No real collector kudos on those ones yet - and, relatively rare though they are, I'm not sure there will be even if you hang on to them.

Camco guys don't seem to be going for them - how's the early Tama collector scene shaping up? If there are any appreciable number of Tama collectors they might be willing to part with reasonable cash for some of these but they don't seem to be congregating here or DFO yet.

I was just wondering if Tama/Camco had similar spacing on their lugs. I still think these are old Camco shells. Too much of a coincedence that there is some white paint residue in the grain of the shells on the inside. Someone did relacquer the outsides, but the paper tag for the serial numbers is still intact on the inside of the shell, and they are all close. I do have an original Camco drum head, though weathered, on one of the shells. BTW, aren't you the same person who bought the shells a few months ago? If you are, how is the kit going?

I'm actually just finishing off that project right now - will end up as a temporary 3D-moire finish.

Camco didn't do white painted shell interiors after the Oaklawn period (1971) though you see a few probably leftovers when they moved to Chanute. By the time they were closing up shop in LA the white painted interiors were a good six or seven years in the past.

But they could well be Camco shells, just drilled for the TamaCamco fittings.

Hi,

Working on the refurbishing, just clean up really of a Camco /Tama jazz kit. Elvin Jones played and did an ad for these "transition" kits in 1979 at the end of the LA period. Not sure why these won't be highly collectible in the future as they are so unique and rare for that matter, with Camco/Tama pirating the Camco/ DW lug (making them in Japan, then shipping them back to LA for assembly) for a year and the quality Maple shell they put them on??? Wishful thinking perhaps? Sure are nice drums though!!

Any thought?

Chances are most likely not since Tama bought the Camco name only along with the designs to the pedal. DW bought the actual tooling, etc for the shells, lugs, mounts and all the hardware. The chances of these being leftover real camco shells is nill. Tama would have used there own shells as it would make no sense to ship leftover shells halfway around the world to be shipped back again.

As a sidenote, I wouldn't mind one of these "Tamco" sets just for the historical footnote value of them and because Elvin owned a set at one point.....LOL!!

Right~ It was interesting to see when cleaning the round "Camco" (soon-to-be DW) lugs, that stamped on the inside was "Made in Japan". The shells are very nice 7-ply maple (higher end Tama) with a high quality gloss finish likely put on in the LA shop, with assembly using the Japanese hardware. The LA shop at this time was very much a custom shop.

The reason Elvin used these or at least did an ad for them (besides being paid) was because the toms are in jazz, pre-fusion sizes 12X9 and 13X 9. Looks sounds and smells like jazz.
