Round Badge Clean Up

From tnsquint

That is looking great! Did you mention what your "top secret" process was?

Step 1 - A mix of Oxiclean, laundry detergent (Tide) in some water applied on the wrap with a damp sponge or rag and wiped off. I let it sit on the wrap for a few minutes and it works down in there. Some spots I srubbed a bit to work it in.

Step 2 - Meguiar's Ultimate Compound

I know it's a satin finish but this one is scratched to heck and it could not get much worse. Anyway the compound was a PITA but once cleaned off made a huge difference.

Spent waaay too much time on this last nite. I took a lot of breaks but still I should have spent this time practicing. Stripped all the hardware off the toms, did one rust removal session only to have the rust come back from not drying off properly. Rack and floor tom cleaned off on the inside (there was something that lived inside the floor tom) and cleaned the wrap.

Most of the internals of the rack tom were spotless. The screws all looked new.

Test fit a head on the floor tom. For some reason a regular Evans G2 was a better fit vs the level 360.

I cleaned, used compound on them and cleaned again. Other than maybe Novus I think they are as good as they will get. Might get to cleaning the hardware today. It all cleaned up easy in the soap bath.

Well it's only because my fun money needed to go elsewhere this month. Also because I am honestly not 100% sure I will keep the kit I am just going to feel it out first.

I can say that I am 100% happy with my Rogers kit. Even my band mates told me it sounded amazing.

Last night I used some scrubbing bubbles to try out. It actually worked so much easier and faster then my method :( I should have used it first but oh well you live and learn.

I have seen lot's of questions about this so I hope once and for all it is settled that Scrubbing bubbles is THE cleaner for satin flame finishes.

Now the strange thing I found by accident is that it can clean up hardware nicely also. Think of it as a great "quick" cleaner for hardware and chrome.

The other thing I found was the bass drum badge was not riveted all the way through the shell but only on the top.

RE: Scrubbing Bubbles - Did you spray on and let sit? Or just wipe right off? Big areas or small areas?

I have a Star kit with this type of wrap and I've yet to try the cleanup (been wayyy busy).

This is looking good. Patience pays off eh?

Doug,

Great question. I sprayed it on the wrap and let the foam work its way into the small grooves. I would say the most I let it sit on there was maybe 5 minutes. I then scrubbed it gently in circles to reveal a very clean wrap.

This process was so much easier then what I did before. I honestly could have cleaned up my entire set in probably an hour with scrubbing bubbles. Such is life though and as I have mentioned before all these tricks I have learned fixing my old drums will work great on my new kits.

Finally got to cleaning up the hardware I had sitting in a bath. I got to cleaning the kitchen and was also messing with this at the same time. This was supposed to be my project on the road but its just about done. Cleaned up really nice.

Just a few more hardware pieces to remove from the bass drum and all the shells will be stripped for cleaning. Hoops will come last.

Put some new heads on the snare, sorted out the new strainer and now time for some pictures. Bowing

The new strainer works great and looks even better.

Now its time to take it for a test drive. I have a few sessions coming up. One of which I am going to A/B about all my gear. Make it easier to sell myself if people can hear not only my playing but also have sound files of the gear I have. My thoughts are I could also pick up session work for studios in the area needing vintage drum sounds.

This was my "top secret" project. My goal was to keep the kit exactly how it was but change the covering. I found some champagne sparkle wrap on ebay. It's fairly close to my 60's Jazzfest in champagne sparkle but not exact.

The kit had no extra holes when I picked it up and I left it that way. All hardware is original except for the tone control units in the floor tom. I replaced those with aftermarket units from Steve Maxwell.
