Hi folks,

I’d love to get some info on this snare drum.

I did some research but couldn’t find this exact same model.

Most of them seem to have die cast hoops.

It’s 5” depth, has 10 lugs, steel shell and hoops.

Serial No: 60152

It cleaned up nicely and sounds very good.

It came with a 1970’s Camco set that I picked up last week. The owner was pretty sure that the snare drum was bought together with the Camco set. The Camcos are LA period so they’re between 1972 - 1978.

I’d like to know the name of the model and when it was manufactured.

Thanks !

Hi Stef,

If that is "Star" that I can see on the strainer then it would be an early King Beat probably MFG around 72-73..

Cheers

Wow, good spotting. So this would be just after the name change. The subsequent King Beats had an updated throw mechanism.

Ah yes, I hadn't noticed that either. Still, looks to be the very first of the Tama shells fitted with the very last of the Star King Beat hardware. The Star drums had triple flange hoops as you can see.

I still have the Star drum in the photo up thread but It will be moving on to another forum member soon, when he's recovered from ChristmasHurting.

Thanks guys,

That’s exactly what it seems to be,... a Tama shell fitted with the older Star snare mechanism and hoops.

I’ve read today on http://www.star-drums.de that Star became Tama in 1974 so it must be around that time frame.

1972 - 1974 would fit with the dates the Camcos were available.

The Star script logo appears indeed on both strainer ends.

I'm thinking early 70's Kingbeat snare, made while Tama was transitioning from Star to Tama. Why not use what you have on hand. It's the same company.

Ludwig did the same thing. How many early 60's Ludwigs do you see with WFL strainers, butts, speed king WFL foor boards, snare stands ect.

I think that Steve is right. I have a set of round badge Stars (1971-1972) with the original hardware. My foot pedal is stamped "Imperial Star, PAT. PEND." Lines are always blurred during transition stages. Like Steve says though, "same company".

All what you members here said, is correct.

If I recall correctly, Stuart Copeland used to play this TAMA snare drum for their famous first Police album.

The first KingBeat snare drums (either Star or Tama) are still much underrated and excellent snare drums, and can be bought at still reasonable prices on feebay.
