Picked up a new pie today....

Ok, so this one isn't a vintage cymbal or even turkish for that matter.......and I know I've been one to totally bash (no pun intended) Dream cymbals, but...............the local drum shop started carrying these Dream cymbals recently.....the first batch or two they got left a lot to be desired to my ears.....but the owner calls me earlier this week and says he has a really good one set aside for me to hear before he puts it out for sale. He knows roughly what I like in a cymbal, and tells me I gotta try it out, if its not for me he'll have no worries and put it out for sale. So I get the chance to stop in today and try it out.....I'm figuring its gonna be another trash can lid like the rest of them I heard the last time I was in. MAN WAS I WRONG! This one sounds KILLER! Its a 22" Dream Vintage Bliss crash/ride. Very turkish K sounding.....think Tony Williams ride sound. Very similar to a 21" Mehmet Legend I had a couple of years ago that I loved, but circumstances $$ wise forced me to part with it in the end. He also hade a 24" Vintage Bliss ride that I liked, but just can't afford right now or have the means to carry it around (I'd need to buy a new cymbal case! LOL!) so I decide to grab the 22" before it goes to someone less deserving than me Cool Dude

Has great ride definition, but you can really get it roaring if you want too as well.....I might be converted to these chinese made cymbals after all.......Hmmmm

heh heh heh. A sly little grin crept over my face as I read the above post. I've been defending the Dreams here on the forum saying that they might not be every mans *Dream* cymbal, but some of us are really digging them.

Congrats on your new pie. I notice you're in Salem NH. I'm 10 minutes from Salem (N. Andover, MA). So where did you find the Dreams locally? Is it the Haverhill dude?

Would be nice to not have to drive to Boston or Acton just to try out a Dream.

Please, do tell....

Yes I picked it up from Sergio over in Haverhill......he's got a new shipment recently.....getting tougher locally to find good drum stuff.....since Joe died from Joes Drum Shop in Beverly (a very close friend I might add and I miss him very much) the family has decided to close the shop. Such a shame as it was worth the trip for me.......he used to have wonderful cymbals there and great vintage gear too. I did a couple of re-wraps for him and a refinish (stain) job for him with good results. Man I miss Joe....we do need another shop like that around here. Since Jacks in Boston closed and since Ted Herberts changed hands....there's almost nothing, other than the Manchester Music Mill.....but I haven't found too much worth anything there of late either.....man I'm just depressing myself here....crying2-07

If the economy was better, I'd make a go of it myself......but I'm not so sure now would be the time to start up something like that.......Hmmmm

Hey, nice deal, Ludwig-dude man !

To have the store man hold it for ya and call ya, now that's some really decent service like you'd never get from feeBay, huh...!?

Like Big daddy, I, too, have long advocated these Dream Bliss pies. My 22" Bliss I ride is awesome. Their hats are really nice, too -- REALLY nice.

A local shop in my neck of the woods just started carrying them now, so I've had a chance to try out some 18" crashes. I wasn't all that thrilled with the batch of Bliss IIIs he had, but he's got another batch of Vintage Bliss on the way, so I'll go and listen to some of them.

I've heard a few nice Dream Contact series rides and hats, too - more of the older Avedis Zildjian sound. I don't care for their Energy series, but the rock players will really dig them.

Better grab up the Dream Bliss pies you want now before they get popular enough that their prices go up, and ya know it'll happen.

Yeah, he had a 24" Vintage Bliss Ride I really liked, but........just not enough $$$ to get both. The 22" crash/ride I got is very dark......even darker and lower in pitch than my K custom darks......still, I think its a good fit....I'll use it on jazzier stuff or as an accent when needed. Its almost got a slight china cymbal quality to it at times too.....when you really get it roaring that is....not much out of pocket for it thats for sure.....the Mehmet Legend I parted with that I really liked and shouldn't have was about 2 1/2 times the price with a very similar sound!

Cool - I've driven by the place several times and it always seems closed. Plus I thought it was a little mom & pop store, but I guess I was wrong. Looks pretty cool. I'll have to stop by and check out the Dreams. I've been *dreaming* about a crash lately :)

Well.....it is kinda mom and pop, but they do most of their business on ebay as it turns out. The store is run by a friend of the owner most of the time. The owner teaches at Berklee most of the week, Sergio Bellotti, so he has someone run it when he can't be there. Maybe contact him through ebay to schedule a time to visit the shop? They are supposed to have regular store hours, but every time I go by it seems closed too! Its all timing I guess.....and if the help shows up! LOL!!

DREAM cymbals are wonderful. I've been on the positive side of this one for sure. I've owned several. I'm still picking 'em up. I have only one bad story...I sold a Dream Bliss 17 crash. I miss it. Do you guys visit this place?

He does a great job of putting up cymbal demo stuff. Great videos let you really get an idea of the exact cymbal you wish to purchase. Excellent to deal with - a plus.

I'm glad you have discovered them. They really are sweet cymbals.

I've checked them out before.....but I'm a firm believer in picking out cymbals in person and bringing your current ones with you to make sure its a good fit. Cymbals are haard to buy sight unheard.....and yes I know its a video with sound, but there are too many variables with that. The kind of mic used, the placement, the type of stick used, how its played....etc, etc.....the only cymbal I would buy from a "box store" sight unheard woulf be Paiste 2002's or Giant Beats. Mainly becasue they make each model sound identical before it goes out the door. All the other hand made cymbals vary too much from one to another to take the chance. Case in point.....they had three of these 22" vintage bliss crash/rides there. Two of them sounded like trash can lids......clank, clank......tung tung tung.......and no shimmer. The one I bought sounded as good as any K or istanbul I've owned.....so cymbals,......you can't mail order or ebay them. You've gotta compare and buy in person. (unless its a Paiste 2002 or GB! LOL!!!)

I just visited the Dreams website, and the Vintage Bliss series doesn't offer any small splashes, but the Bliss series does, any thoughts about those? I've been looking for an older A splash, but no joy yet, how would the Dreams compare? Thanks!!
