Premier 1972 B202 refurb

Loading...

Hi guys and my first post so here is a project I have just recently completed.

I am a sound engineer in film and TV but have a passion for all things musical and play and record most instruments, my main kit is a Drumcraft ser 6 with Dream cymbals but I have always liked classic Premier kits after my Uncle Lee showed me the basics in 1966 when I was six:

Here is a classic 1972 Premier drum kit I got off e-bay and have re-furbished to it's former glory. 22x14" kick drum, 14x10" rack tom, 16x15" floor tom, all 3 ply mahogany shells. 14x5.5" 2000 alloy snare drum with 60's zyn cymbals.

I totally stripped the shells and cleaned and lubricated all parts, the shells are in pretty good condition with just the usual tom rash and dings. They polished up great with some autoglym car products.

I have added some basic CB drums hardware for the moment but plan to get a matching hihat and cymbal stands in time.

It sounds fantastic with the single ply heads on it.

I also have a 1966 royal ace 14x5.5" wooden snare in blue pearl and a 1966 4" metal royal ace along with another almost as new 2000 snare.

Some more pics and to slightly modernise the kit I have added nylon washers to the tensioners and some metal bass drum hoops as the wooden ones have been really badly painted, I also like the look of the anniversary logo on the kick head:

Hi Gary,

Great Job on a beautiful Kit. 70s Premiers are the Best and best looking! The Icing on the Cake would have been the original '70s Premier (Bass Drum) Logo from that Era, but that's just me.

Good Luck for that Hardware Search. Lokfast Stands will look great with that Kit. There's a Bunch of Matching Cymbal Arms on the .bay right now, by the way..!

Thanks for Sharing,

Lars

I wonder where your Uncle's Kit is now..?

Welcome. I am quite fond of Premier kits as well. Nice job on that. I don't know that I have seen a mounted tom with dual lugs before. Maybe that was unique to 14" drums? Very nice regardless. Fantastic photo with your uncle by the way.

Thanks for the kind words and I will put a 70's new era decal on a head once I can find one at a decent price. There are some in the states but the shipping is way too much: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Premier-Text-Logo-Bass-Drum-Decal-BLACK-/200569538547?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb2e047f3

My Uncles 50's kit was on UK e-bay last year and I tried to buy it but got outbid by £5 in the last few minutes, it was in Newcastle nearby and we knew it was his as the floor tom was an unusual size and a special order.

I saw the cymbal arms on e-bay and may get one to complete it, I think the double tom nut boxes are due to the size of the 14x10 tom as I also have not seen one before.

What a drag to have missed out on your uncle's kit.

I also noticed the double bass drum spurs. I don't recall seeing Premier drums with that feature. Slingerland and later Ludwig, but not Premier.

I think they were added later as the holes are different, a good idea though as it stabilises the kick drum a lot.

The tom mount is very fragile though and I have already replaced one of the mounts as they are prone to splitting.

Fortunately the large rack tom has an extension section added so at least all of the dagger blade can be inserted all the way into the kick and tom mounts.

I have guestimated that this kit is from 1972 as the badges have serial numbers and the 14x10 did not come in till around then, other evidence is the shop it came from in Workington Cumbria as there are two stickers on the drums.

The shop was opened in 1972 by "Tiny" Brian Holmes and was still going until he retired in 2008 aged 63, he was in two 60's bands in the Uk called the Defenders and The Electrons and I have his contact details so I am trying to see if he remembers selling the kit.

cool kit. I have a '72 202 that I love. It has the mahogany shells, my favourites. Mine has the 13" tom which I understand came out in 72, and the 20"BD. Are you original hoops in ok shape apart from the paint? I refurbed mine and it was a pretty simple job.

I got my BD logo from this guy and the shipping price was very reasonable and the service great. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Premier-70s-vintage-bass-drums-sticker-logo-decal-Signia-/271131963907?pt=Decals_Stickers_Vinyl_Art&var=&hash=item3f20b97203

And you'll love the Lokfast hardware and you're in the right place to be able to pick some up at a reasonable price.

Lovely kit Andrew and thanks for the link for the logo, I have asked my UK supplier if she can do me some but if not I will order a few from the states in various colours to complete it.

The hoops are Ok with just a few marks where the kick pedal was located and a small chunk missing so I am stripping them down ready for a refurbish and re-paint.

Under the terrible matt black paint is a gold colour so I think they may have been gold with a black centre stripe.
