Mystery Slingerlands

Loading...

Hi everyone. first time forum visitor, recreational drummer for 40 odd years. I have some vintage stuff and a lot of questions that I'm sure some of you guys can help me with. So, here goes......

I've acquired what I believe to be 70's era set of maple Slingerlands and they came with 3 side toms and a very unusual arrangement of two tom holders on the bass drum, one in front of the other. When the toms are mounted in place they are in a 'triangular' position, which I find quite odd. I'm now thinking that perhaps someone along the way have added the second tom holder? Anyone out there seen one of these?

It's probably the Slingerland Avante

"The Avanti presents an entirely new concept for

Rock Drummers. There are 4 toms in all with a

"triple play" action, mounted on top of the bass

drum. Two Set-O-Matic tom tom holders are centered

between two pair of rugged spurs to assure perfect

balance - another great rock set and another

Slingerland first".

( Unless you played a Rogers Londoner VI )

Pay no attention to the drummer behind the toms...

Hi,

I purchased this kit new in 1971. My kit had the chrome finish. I used the kit until 1984 when I went electronic. They sat in a room completely beat up as they went on the road with me in soft cases (OUCH)

This past October I found a local guy here in Boston and he is rehabbing the kit (bass, 12"tom and the 16" floor tom. The 13" and 14" went missing after my divorce. Maybe my X was planning to use them for my ashes ? :-)

The kit should be ready in about a month. The plies needed re-gluing, the bearing edges have all been done over and I replaced the tom holder with the Yamaha Yess system. (my two other kits are Yamaha) The color is going to be a pink sparkle... Can't wait. I loved that kit. Planning on using Remo coated ambassadors on the toms, have not decided on a kick head yet

That'll be one eye-popping set when it's done. Be sure to post some pictures.

Hi,

If my memory serves me well I never liked the 3 toms on top. I bought a double tom holder and mounted the 13&14 over my floor tom. The 12 in front with the ride cymbal to the right of that. I was a Carl Palmer nut back then and set my kit up close to what he was doing back with his stainless steel kit. I added roto toms, a 48" gong, many cymbals. The whole 70's thing.

Didj'a get the groupies, too ?

yeah, that's what I mean. Doing a fill across the toms in that configuration....ick...I dunno, it wouldn't flow for me, ergonomically (but again, I suppose w/ practice anyone can adjust)
