Restoring a Slingy snare

Loading...

Here we go again. This drum was sent to me by drumhack. It is a 1961 Slingerland 7" x 15" snare drum. Thats right, 15" diameter, well actually

14 13/16 or 14 7/8 measuring 90 degrees from each other. It appears to be a 3 ply, mahogany inside and out, I assume poplar between and maple re-rings. There wer two extra holes near the strainer, I patched them up with some wood filler, I will do my best to make them go away.

The finish came off pretty easy and now I have a mahogany shell that looks pretty good, a little rough but with some stain and shading addative under a nice coat of gloss, this thing should come out stunning. Drumhack has picked out a color from Minwax, Sedona red. My finish supplier and color studio can make any minwax color, they are just amazing people.

Anyway, off to work now!

Oh, and almost forgot. This drum appeared to have been re-finished at one point, the grommet was all chewed up like someome had removed the badge. My guess is someone thought that putting several coats of polyurathane would be really nice. Those cracks indicate a finish that was way to thick, so if your going to do this yourself, be careful not to build the finish to thick!

Thank you!

OK, first coat of level sealer was tinted to make the stain job uniform. Coats 2-3-4 are clear level sealer. Here ar pics of coats 2-3

Pic one, shell sanded after 2 coats of level sealer.

Pic 2, close up of the holes filled in

Pic 3, shell sanded after 3 coats.

Pic 4, close up of holes filled in.

You can see how after each coat of sealer how the grain starts to fill in.

The fouth coat should fill in the remaining low spots, then one coat of gloss and were done.

Level sealer is designed to build like this, you can build it to a max of 12 dry mils. Great stuff!

Thank you!

Man, I have never seen crazing like that on a drum! It came out great stripped though. The wood on that one looks sweet. Always fun to follow one of your refurbishing projects. I have no doubt this is going to be another killer looking drum from you.

Drumhack, you lucky dog! That's a sweet drum and Jeff is the best. You'll get back a drum you can be proud to own and play.

First two pics are how the shell looks after sanding the fourth coat of level sealer.

Last two are the shell with one coat of gloss. Think Imight do one more gloss coat.

Thank you!

I don't know how many coats you applied on my mahogany kit, but the finish is perfect. Do whatever you did to mine to drumhacks shell. He'll love it! I know I love the way mine came out. MickM was over today and he played them... it was love at first strike!

Believe it or not, that snare was a throw-in on a free Supra Rogersling sent me. Actually, the Supra was the one I got that strainer off of you for, a while back. So, a box showed up with two snares! (thanks again Michael!)

I threw that huge 7x15 on the kit, and have never played with a different snare since. I am getting a little grey, but louder is still better in my book!

Getting it refinished was all just a matter of circumstance. JC needed a floor tom, I had one, I had a snare that needed a face lift, he is, based on the pics of your kit, obviously a refinishing master (I can't be the only guy who has never heard of level sealer before....lol) and it just took off.

I won't go into detail as my word is my word, but it should be known JC also put a great deal of effort into a hairbrained notion of mine, with nary a complaint. Of course if there is a big middle finger stained on the front of this drum when I open it up, I probably deserve it.....LOL. (joke)

So the plan is for me to get home from this hole-in-the-wall in Kansas I am currently working at, head downtown (Pittsburgh) to the online drum parts store I never knew was down there, pick up all new chrome, and go to town on that beast!

The really ridiculous part is I use that snare on a kit with hybrid-sized birch drums.....LOL. My "audience" has never complained......LOL

Jeff- (as always, no rush at all) When I get it and it is all put together 100%, I will take a few pics, email them to you, and you can pick out the pics you want to post on the site as the finished shots of another awesome resto-job!!!
