Eyelet/Grommet Tool

Loading...

Could anyone recommend a good Eyelet/Grommet Tool?

I've been looking around online and not everyone sells them.

My Old Kentucky Drums sells this one even though it isn't cheap:

Jammin Sam also sells one at a great price BUT only if you buy drum wrap from him and only on orders $100 or more! I've read negative things about him being like that, not selling small quantities etc...

Precision Drum sells one for $5.00 which seems similar to jammin sam's:

I've heard of some people using a ball bearing and a hammer...placing the drum with eyelet inserted on a flat surface, place the ball bearing on top of the eyelet and then lightly tapping the bearing and slowly flaring the inside of the eyelet...but I'm a bit of a newbie as I've never had to deal with kind of thing. It would be a shame to go through all of that work of wrapping drums only to ruin it by screwing up the eyelet/badge.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks very much.

I purchased the factory made grommet tool about 6 months ago...Since then, I`ve installed a few grommets/air vents...The machined nut makes a perfect flair on the grommet edge...Although not cheap, I would definitely recommend it if you install grommets/air vents on a regular basis...

I mainly had used my homemade tool to "tighten up" loose grommets...It did the job well, though I never actually installed a grommet/air vent with it, so I can`t really comment about how well it would work...

Cheers

ive done the hammer on hammer method successfully a couple of times, but it has always been just to tighten a loose factory grommet.

Place the ball end of a small ball peen hammer (under $5 in the bargain bins at hardware stores) against the open end of the grommet inside the drum shell. Tap the upward-facing flat side of the ball peen hammer a few times gently but firmly. The open end will compress to form a nice rounded flange against the interior surface of the shell. Just have a spare grommet or two there in case you botch the first attempt. I'm a ham-fisted klutz who got it right on the first try, and a few more times since that first one.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Bermuda -

As a noob, while simple as it probably is in reality, can you itemize the parts you used in your eyelet/grommet tool. I've got a need for this and I can't seem to find a simple, clear answer for a tool that will let me install a new badge vent grommet.

Thanks so much.

I use the ones from Precision. They have two different sizes.

The expensive ones have the inner surfaces of the nuts machined to form the flair perfectly. I've put together several different versions from hardware store parts and none of them have ever worked as well as the one I bought from My Old Kentucky Drums. It's expensive, but like most things, the right tool makes a big difference. It will only work on one size of grommet though, mine is for the size Ludwig used.
