Ludwig Club Date Drums

Loading...

I recently acquired a nice set of Blue Sparkle Pearl finish Club Dates from the original owner. I everything it came with; acrolite snare, paiste cymbals, a hi-hat (not in original brochure but an ala carte purchase with the set), the original base drum pedel, I even have the cow bell and holder. They may even have the original heads.

Here is my question, as I was cleaning the set I noticed that the wing-tom and bass have a clear finish and the floor tom has a white painted finish. The floor tom has a date stamped inside but it is smudged and not readable. The wing-tom and bass have serial numbers 64xxxx while the floor tom is 56xxxx, but I know from research that the S/N and dates are not always correlated.

Do we know from dates when they used clear finishes and when they painted them white? Is there a sound advantage to either?

Are all badges the same style ? If so, it could very well be that this was how the kit came from the factory; maybe assembled and sent out during the phaseout of the white interiors.

No, the paint doesn't effect the sound.

Question, are the insides of the bass and rack tom clear-coated, or just no finish applied at all ?

A pic might help.

Sound advantage? not really. They sound pretty much the same. My dog might hear a slight amount more warmth from the unpainted shells, but nothing a human should be concerned about! Falling Do

Serial numbers: Sometimes there are discrepancies between floor toms vs. mounted ("wing" tom, as you say) because, on occasion, someone would would buy the mounted tom and bass drum, together, with a plan for adding on a floor tom later. (In the old days, kids had to save their money -mow lawns, paper routes, etc. in order to buy something like a set of drums!).

EDIT: AND...snare drums were often out-of-sequence with the rest of the set for much the same reason. Music shops always had a snare drum -especially and Acrolite or a Supra around -because those drums were available and the price was right.

It is possible (especially in a small town old-time music shop) that an older floor tom could have been left over from an earlier tom/bass drum-only purchase and then that leftover floor tom could have been used to complete a slightly newer model bass and tom combo. Does that make sense?

It would be really nice if you could post some pictures of the drums!

In the 1960's era drums and sets, the interiors were painted white from about 1963 until sometime in 1968. Prior to 1963, drums displayed the mahogany ply on the interior. After 1968, the interiors were maple.

Yes, the badges are all keystones.

As for the bass and tom-tom, they have a varnish or some other kind of clear coat on them - they are not raw wood

That's correct. They should have some kind of sealer/varnish. I meant natural wood and not painted. Sorry.

If the drums are in that 1964-65 era, it's possible there are some other discrepancies, too -like the color of the felt on the mufflers. Is it red or white felt?

The felt on the floor tom is white with a baseball bat lever. The tom-tom is a round grey felt with a round chrome adjuster

Aha! Well then, it would be my guess that you have a clear-cut division of time here -not a matter of a few months, but of years. The round mufflers came in at around 1968. The indication on your floor tom badge and white felt BB muffler puts it around 1965. It would not be considered a "factory-matched" kit for this reason. I would still like to see pictures of them all the same!
