Question on cleaning old MIJ drums

Loading...

So I got this Majestic kit recently and the rack tom and snare are very pretty orange/gold sparkle. The bass drum was or maybe is but I'm concerned about cleaning it. The wrap doesn't have a glossy covering to it. It's odd (to me anyway).

Anyone else encounter this type wrap? Any cleaning tips?

I have Novus and a few other things but the finish feels like paper.

Pretty hard for people to offer much of measurable worth if we can't at least see some pictures of what you are talking about. My guess site unseen is that you have something that someone tried to clean with a strong solvent which could have removed some of the glossiness of the finish. But that's just a guess, would really need to see what we are talking about.

Maybe it was once painted over and someone removed the paint with lacquer thinner? That'll definitely dull up the wrap and take the gloss off.

The sparkle/metallic/glass glitter wraps of old vintage MIJ was not usually shiny/glossy. It has a 'surface' that is more like orange peel. The reflection of the light off the bits of metal/sparkles, etc. is what gives it the dazzling look.

Indeed post some pics - and do not try to shine it. Just a gentle cleaning of it will do (soapy water - dawn and water is best) - and allow the dazzle to not be impeded by dirt. Just be careful not to get the wood wet.

Meanwhile, modern sparkles ,glass glitter, etc. wraps are entirely different in that they have the shiny glossy surface, not unlike other modern wraps of different colors.

Once you post pics we will very much so be able to help you with your concerns. Chances are, whatever you are dealing with has already been dealt with by someone else here.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

I know pictures would help. I wanted to post this while I was thinking about it and the camera and drums weren't with me.

The finish does feel like an orange peel. That's a perfect description. I will take some before pics tonight but I'm going to try the soap and water approach....pardon me, Dawn and water.

Thanks!

BTW - LOVE those Normals - Andrew Osenga and his band.

I will post pictures....I don't know when because that job comes after I clean and set the 9pc Milestone kit I got, and then the silver sparkle clubdates. I'm pretty much relegated to only having weekends to do this.
