69 Ludwigs

Loading...

I've owned this kit since 1975. I've used them a lot to play a wide variety (gospel to semi-heavy metal) of music over the years and hope to get another 30 years or so out of them! I hope you enjoy the pic.

Great looking kit! Is it me or are there more Mod Orange kits popping up lately? Anyway......I think your kit may actualy be from 1968 due to the white painted interiors and the small script logo head. Kind of a shame that you cut a mic hole in it though.....Also the block logo on the tom holder was only used a couple of years before changing to the more common 70's logo.

Could be '68s, but the date stamp in each is "Dec 11, 1969." Could they be early release '70s?? And, yes, there does seem to be a bit more noise about the Mod Orange color lately -- although I've yet to see another one in person. Regarding the hole in the bass head, for years I played them with no bottom heads. I recently replaced all the heads and put new resonants on, too (and the original bass head). The bass just didn't sound right to me without the hole. The snare is not the original. I bought it separately in the early 70s. Sad to say, I've lost track of the snare that came with the kit (which seemed identical to this one except for the logo).

Those look really nice. I too am curious about the date stamp. With that paint like that they should be 1967's or early 1968's. I believe the color started around June of 1967 along with psych red. By march of 1968 the white paint seems to stop. Also by Dec 1969 I believe the blue olive badges were already pretty much in place. What are the serial numbers on your badges? I was'nt able to see what mufflers you had on the set either. Are they round knob or baseball bat style?

Also by late 1969 Ludwig was using the curved spurs that retracted into the bass drum. Your set still has the fold out wing spurs. If I were to hazzard a guess I would say your set was made around Dec 1967. I could be wrong as I have seen many Ludwig oddities but your set is pretty far off the parameters for Dec 1969. Either way it's an awsome set as mod orange is by far my favorite color. Here are my march 1969's.
