Is my 60 slingy snare stained or varnished?

Loading...

I just finisshed sanding the shell of my 1960 slingy snare. I went to 2 different stores yesterday to get a stain for my slingy. I ended up getting dark oak satin polystain. It has the stain mixed in with the polyurethane. Does anyone know what color it is supposed to be? Does anyone know if it is, in fact stained or just varnished? I just want it right.Help2

Thanks for any help here.

Well...I believe they sold 'em in Mahogany and Walnut, Lacquers, and Pearls. But like most drum companies, this was only an outline within which to work. i.e. there are exceptions (knotty pine anyone).

I have a kit in Mahogany finish. It is a Maple outer with a nice Mahogany stain and a light bit of shiny. It has aged well. If your drum was wrapped, then it most likely has a Mahogany outer which will look different from mine. But, then again...exceptions exceptions exceptions.

You should do alright with what you purchased. The natural wood snares were definitely stained by the 60's and 70's. They were using Maple as an outer and Maple doesn't have that dark of a tone (colorwise). The early snares were made of Mahogany and Walnut (and others), so they had a natural color tone to them. Yours and mine don't fall into that category.

Hope this helps.

Good luck with the project.

The drum was definatly natural finish. It had a hidious leapord contact paper on it. I pulled the contact paper off of the shell and it took a little bit of the finish with it. I heated the contact paper and it came off smoothly after that, but since a little bit of the finish came off, i decided to sand all the finish off of it and restain it.

Thanks!

AAAHHHH! I remember this one. It was an 'unusual' choice in finishes. Definitely a "to each his own" kind of a look. Yes. That was real Mahogany under that. You should be just fine doing what you are doing. I would love the see the finished product.
