1950s Large non-block stamp

I acquired this 18" 1496g cymbal in January 2013. The seller made the following claims about its history: "late 1953 Avedis Zildjian 18 inch crash ride, acquired from a retired drummer who received it as a gift from the late great jazz drummer Shadow Wilson... (stamp was) produced for only a few months late in 1953 right after Zildjian ended its trans-stamp engravings and right before the company began its small engraving in 1954."

I'll let some others here give their opinions on the above dates. I thought this stamp was so different from anything I've seen on the internet so I'm posting detailed photos, along with detailed dimensional data in inches and mm as measured with a digital caliper.

Overall stamp height: 1.916", 48.66mm

Distance from cymbal edge: 2.915", 74.04mm

AVEDIS height: 0.150", 3.81mm

AVEDIS width: 0.792", 20.12mm

ZILDJIAN CO height: 0.174", 4.42mm

ZILDJIAN CO width: 1.536", 39.02mm

Mounting hole diameter: 0.460", 11.69mm

Interesting because that's a large stamp. That could all be true about the the 1953 and 1954 era. I've generally lumped all the large stamps into one general time period (1955) not having any good evidence of just exactly when and in what order they were used. Maybe I can use this info.

when a large stamp is a non hollow block, have you both the three dots and lack of three dots in these type stamps? if I recall correctly, the hollow block stamp usually has the three dots.

Yes the hollow one always has the 3 dots.

I owned an 18" just like that one, bought it from JPtrickster over at cymbalholic. I also was told the same story about the stamp only existing in that time period. I ended up selling that cymbal and I regret it. Such a great 18" cymbal to have on your left in a jazz context, it could crash and ride so well.

I'll never sell this one and certainly never polish it. It's just too cool to look at the huge stamp and perfect patina. It is also fun to ride (with small-tip sticks) and crash.

The size in the overall image looks similar. It would be helpful if you can take measurements. I posted detailed measurements of my cymbal's stamp in order to help others to make a scholarly comparison.

A digital caliper can be purchased for as little as $9.99 on sale at your local Harbor Freight store if you are lucky to live near one. I think every serious cymbal collector should own one. It would be great if we in the drumming community could put together a list of critical stamp dimensions such as overall stamp size, AVEDIS height/width, ZILDJIAN CO height/width. This would make comparative studies easier compared to "large 50s stamp", "small 70s stamp", "might be a 50s or 70s stamp" and so on.
