star lugs (the thin pointy ones) metric threads?

I am wondering if Star ever used metric threading in their lugs? I have a tom that none off the tension bolts i have will work with. It came with top head intact and those tension bolts have a different threading than any i have. Is it possible that they used metric on early drums?

Yes, sir, since Stars were made in Japan, metric threads were used in the lugs. Either you'll have to find the correct t-rods or use inserts in the lugs. That might not be a great idea since the inserts may be too big in diameter to fit the lugs. If you tap out the lugs, you'll ruin the originality of the lug. I'd search for the correct t-rods. Best of luck.

I ran into the same situation and sold the lugs off- the insert diameter would not have taken a 12/24 re-tap without either being very weak or just destroying it. The screws that attach the lug to the drum are also metric,if I recall.

I just went through this with my Apollo's with the "Shark tooth" lugs; You'll want to double check to be sure, but the lugs on mine are M5/ 0.90 (which means 5mm in diameter and 0.90 threads/mm). It is very unusual. Luckily for me, one of the local drum shops in the Twin Cities (namely Ellis Drums in Saint Paul) had a few in exactly the length I needed, for a very reasonable $1 apiece. I got what I needed and left at least 3 more for the next desperate guy. Good luck.

mbira, just curious about something...do your lugs have a lip around the bottom or are they without? Thanks.

didn't realize there was 2 kinds of pointy lugs i will have to take a look. I have some on another drum but those take the regular tension screws. All the music stores close by me that would have drum parts have closed there doors during the last decade.

thanks for the responses!

Brian, there appear to be no lips on any of these lugs I have. I am curious why you ask?

I have a seven piece Star kit ( on drum gallery, Star Kit in Turquois Sparkle, or something similar). The set is mostly from around 1971. A second tom that I added had the pointy lugs but, they had a lip around them when I bought the tom. They are all round badge and I doubt if they are more than a year or two apart. I have since purchased more lugs with the lip. I suppose the lugs with the lips around might be slightly stronger.

Not trying to hijack the thread but where did you find the ones with the rolled edge? I've been looking for two years and have only found 11 of them I need one more to complete a tom project.

D'uh but it never occured to me that these tension rods would be metric. Now I have to score some of those too. Anyone know of a source? I don't need vintage ones.
