Martin Era Fibes Material confusion

Loading...

I sold a snare on Fibes which I thought was Fiberglass. It's solid black and the inside is solid black. The buyer returned it stating it was acrylic. He had cut away a small inch long piece from the inside of the drum near the seam and sure enough the drum shell is clear. HEre are my questions;

Did the drum come w/ the black interior?

Should I remove the black interior to get a clear drum or should I leave it and have a black acrylic drum?

Is there a difference in demand?

Is it a 5 or 5 1/2 .....where do you take the measurment...w/ the rim on or off?

I bought the drum from someone about 5 years ago for 300.00 who told me it was fiberglass. Is the acrylic drum worth less?

thanks

Mike

You measure without the rims.

Fibes made both acrylic and fiberglass drums.

I'm pretty sure the wrapped ones were fiberglass and the clear, solid black and some others (like that weird bumpy ice looking one) were acrylic. Don't quote me on this!

the one I have is definately clear plastic w/ a black (painted?) interior...all that time I thought it was fiberglass because it's black. Would it be worth more to remove the black or ebay as is? thanks,

Always best to leave it as it.

I had exacly the same kind of drum. Somebody knowledgeable (I forget who) told me that it was indeed factory and that Fibes made drums like this for a few endorsers. I guess they wanted the sound of acrylic without the see-through look. Mine was a great sounding drum. I sold it to a former student who now refuses to sell it back to me.

Don't strip the paint. Your drum is probably worth more with it than without it. If you want a clear acrylic Fibes, plenty were made in all three era of Fibes (Farmingdale, Martin and Austin) so they're out there. Just be patient and you'll find one!

Well that certainly changes my attitude towards this drum.....I'll try to dig up more on that lead...thanks!
