Just picked this up tonight. Majestic blue onyx kit in cool sizes 20x14 12x8 14x13 5x14. Lots of dirt but not a speck of rust. All original heads (I think?) Next up: tear down and re-hab. Did the spit test on the wrap and it looks fabulous!! The guy had it for 100. and I wasn't about to haggle when I looked at them. Maybe Ralf could chime in on some history of these. Does anyone know if this was the original bass head design? The cymbals are all Kent but the hats seem better quality than typical Kents and say "Kent Super" Made in Germany?? I'll have to ask my friend Mouse. Sorry about the quality of the pics, I'm waiting for my new camera
Cool Majestic "Blue Onyx" Kit
Notice the little cymbal tilter on top of the hi hat. I've never seen one of those!Cool1
Cracked one open. Painted grey interiors and unusually nice bearing edges.
i LIKE LIKE LIKE!
Indeed Star made - the cymbal tilter is meant to go on top/end of a rod that completes a cymbal stand. I would like to see that up close.
That kit, including the snare is going to sound GREAT, as long as the shells are 'true' and you install all new heads (which you should since you are only 100 deep into it so far!) Tune to the timbre pitch (shell).
Steel BD hoops made to look like typical wood ones!
That kit was a steal! Love that you also have some original hardware too!

Nice score! Agreed - no need to haggle on a good price. Full kit, nice finish, nice sizes, good condition. Good to see they're in the hands of someone who will appreciate them. Cool1

Great score, richm!
This 'Blue Agate Pearl' (Star called it this way) is nice. The snare strainer is a type which is not often to be seen at Star snares: the so called Super Strainer.
I'm not sure whether I've seen that bd logo before, but somehow something in me said I've seen this 'OXO' logo before ... Unfortunately I can't remember when and where.
This cymbal holder on the hihat is a cute little modification.
I guess the copied silver sealer/ grey interior dates it more to the early 70's.
Does anyone know when Gretsch started to paint the shells inside with silver sealer? This might be a good hint to help dating such Star's.
Don't know why, but I have a soft sport for red thrones ...

NB: PM sent
Hey, GREAT find!
I picked up a 5 pc Majestic kit in late July. Gold sparkle also in very good condition. The interiors (multi-ply, no re-rings, grey interior) are the same as these.
The reso-head on the BD matches mine perfectly! So, maybe that is the original head!
BTW -- I'm still needing 5 two inch (appr) tension rods for the reso head on the 14" FT... Odd-ball metric threads. If anyone has any, please PM me!

Nice kit Rich.
Ralf - I'd seen that reso head somewhere, too. Then I remembered http://binghamton.craigslist.org/msg/4062756080.html
The more I tear this kit down, the more impressed I am. Built really nice. They went the extra mile with painted interiors, really nice bearing edges and the hardware. The insides are immaculate, like they were built yesterday. The bass drum cymbal holder is COB!! Is that normal for a MIJ kit? I may keep this kit, I gave it a test run before I started to take it apart and couldn't believe how they sounded! The bass, snare and MT sounded like studio drums. The FT is a little ringy. Rich
