As much as Ralf loves Stars, I think he will agree with me when I say that there are drawbacks to Stars:Quite a lot of the lugs are very brittle by now, so utmost care has be taken when removing/refitting them....

Maybe you're right here (conc. brittle of the lugs), Jon, but - fortunately? - I haven't made the same experience until now: I never 'lost' one lug due to braking into parts (while knockin' 3 times on wood).

...Cheap japanese drums are the best deal if found in complete form, needing only cleaning and handywork like edges and so on....

Well, maybe I have just been unlucky.

I have a set of "Shark-tooth" Star lugs from an acrylic floortom that our Postservice smashed for a friend - most of them are crumbling around the mounting holes in a way, I have only seen the like of on early Tamas - my Superstars and also the cheaper Swingstar series. Take care when handling them!

If you take 10 old Tamas, chances are they will miss a couple of lugs. Take 10 old Pearls, Ludwigs, Slingerlands or Premiers - they are likely to be complete in the lugs-department.

Otherwise, as I said - Stars, especially the early 3-layer shells with rings - are good sounding kits with quality shells.

So you're talking about the early Tama's. My knowledge 'ends' at the time when Tama started. You may be right there.

But conc. Star I wouldn't attest that. Otherwise I would have plenty of queries in this regards due to my website - which isn't the case (actually not even one until now).

Then I must have been unlucky with the Star-lugs.

Do you want the rest, Ralf?

Yours for the postage from Denmark....
