Trying Again: Gretsch Snare - I cleaned it up. Take a look!

Loading...

Since I didn't get any offers from my other thread, I decided to try my hand at restoring this drum. I completely disassembled the drum and cleaned it up. The rust is gone*, the wrap has been re-glued, the lugs are oiled, and the rims have been straightened out (as much as I could).

If you have seen my other post where I tried to sell this drum, you will not believe the transformation it has made. Take a look at the before pics: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=6646

The only thing NOT original on this drum are the heads, the strings holding the snare, and one of the bolts on the inside of the drum holding the snare adjustment lever. The snare itself and all other hardware is original (to the best of my knowledge, anyway).

As you can see from the photos, it looks like a different drum. I took it down to the local drum shop to get the heads tuned up (since I didn't want to mess that up) and the guy who helped me drooled over the drum. He said it has a "sweet sound" and if he had the money he'd buy it.

At any rate, take a look. If you're interested, I'm asking $400. This thing really looks like new now and does sound pretty amazing. I'll keep this offer open for 1 week before posting this on Craig's list and Ebay, just because a lot of the people here have been very helpful to me.

*Note: Most of what I thought was rust, turned out not to be rust but Coca-Cola or some other type of sticky splatter. While there was some surface rust on the rims, it has been removed pretty much without a trace. There was no rust at all on the lugs or the lug springs. They were mint.

By the way, here's the exact same drum in just about identical condition, with a different colored wrap, going for $375 + shipping on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120396030400

I was wrong on the era. Apparently it's a 60s era dixieland snare.

Don't mean any offense, but 6 lug student model Gretsch snare drums regularly sell from $150-225. Check ebay's completed auctions. 8 lug name band models in common finishes sell for $340-500.

No offense taken.

Unfortunately, finding comparables on Ebay is difficult. The fact is, I can't find many similar listings for 60s era, 6 lug Dixielands with this finish.

Here's what I did find (in addition to the link above):

Same drum, much worse condition, seller "[doesn't] know much about drums." Current bid $62, no reserve: Ebay Link.

Similar drum, scratched finish, sold with "Buy it Now" for $150: Ebay Link.

Similar drum, different finish, listed for $250, didn't sell: Ebay Link.

Same finish, but this one is stained in spots, just the shell, sold for $175: Ebay link.

In my opinion, the closest comparison is the one where just the shell sold for $175, but it's a tough call either way. There just isn't a lot to compare this drum to, leading one to believe these drums, in saleable/usable condition, are not that common.

On top of that is the fact that literally the only thing wrong with this drum is the slight deformation on the rims, which is common on these 6 lug models, and some minor pitting of the chrome, also common on 40 year old drums (and not noticeable unless you look really closely).

That being said, I'm certainly not trying to gouge anyone or sell this for more than it's worth, but I took the time and effort to restore this puppy (which is time saved by the buyer), so I'd like to get a fair price for it. If you don't think it's worth $400 shipped, but are interested in it, make me an offer and I'll see what I can do. :D

As an FYI, someone bought the drum in that link using "By it Now" for $375.
