Ebay/Craigslist rant....appology in advance

Loading...

Is it me or has both ebay and craigslist gone down the Toilet since the economy has taken a turn for the worst? I used to sell vintage gear on ebay up until about a year ago when I got tired of getting stiffed about 60% of the time. Also the increasing fees and the change from making it pro-seller to pro-buyer was a big factor too. I haven't bought much off of ebay of late either....seems that the deals aren't really deals and the number of scams has increased too. Doesn't seem worht it anymore. So with that said, I figured to give craigslist a shot for a while, hey its free what have I got to lose, right? Well....seems like the local craigslist is patroled by the Gestapo Storm Trooper.....everytime I post more than one item it get flagged as spam/overposting. Now, nowhere in the craigslist terms of use does it state I have to list all my stuff in one ad, so I figure multiple adds to be ok, you know one ad per item, like on ebay? Apparently a select few on there are bored and have nothing better to do than flag every posting on craigslist just because they feel that I have too many things for sale! Now, when things did stay up for more than a day the flood of emails from the scam artists start rolling in. "Do you still have the ITEM? I'll send you a check for the ITEM plus more for shipping, you send it when the check clears." First of all....uh-uh, no way. cash only no checks and second, why can't you tell me what the ITEM is that I'm selling? These rolled in every couple of days if the ad wasn't flagged and deleted as spam/overposts.

So here I am all ticked off about both sites and I still have the gear I was trying to sell in the first place! Other than forums like this specializing in vintage drums and the local bulletin boards at the music shop (which they don't like because its competing directly with them) what a dude to do to sell his gear for what he wants for it? Local newspapers don't cut it any more and the want ad magazines are about as bad as craigslist.....deadbeats who say they want your stuff and never show up, or try to talk you down on your price by alot even after you emailed them detailed pics and described the gear to the letter and told them you were firm in your price, or the best one.....you emailed them the pics, they claim to be interested, until......they get there and its "not what I was expecting". I call these jokers the "tire-kickers".

Now I know the economy downright sucks right now, but if you are responding to an ad that states price is firm, knowing what the price is in advance, why would you waste someone's time like this? I mean if you don't have the cash, why waste the seller's time? :rolleyes:DOH

Thanks for reading and letting me vent....sorry in advance to any who may be offended by this post.....:2Cents:Coffee Break2

Post your wares on this site, or other drummer's forums.

If insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, is it insane to practice?

I hear you man, BELIEVE me, I hear you. Being fed up with ebay was the reason I started my own website, but that has its own problems. Tire kickers have always been annoying, but they are much more so when your item consistently doesn't sell. Oh the stories I could tell about some of the wackos out there...calling or showing up at my door at 2 or 3 am...

Craigslist is great, selling or buying, locally-face to face. No shipping, no - cheque's in the mail, ect. Arrange to meet at a good time and place and have done with it. I've had no problems selling or buying. It's local.

No problems buying on e-bay either, but the first and only time I sold something on e-bay proved to be a real hassle with the buyer.

Will try e-bay again and see how it goes.

Classifieds in forums is good too, maybe cuts the bull**** in half. Hopefully more. Good folks here

I've had stuff on craigslist off and on for over a year now and I've sold only one thing through there. I know its free to list, but IMO it really doesn't work all that well. Lots of flakes/wackos/stiffs on there too. I've posted a couple of things on here.....I'll see how it goes I guess.....

One thing I've been doing recently, which I feel makes my life a bit easier, is posting vintage stuff on eBay and non-vintage stuff on C-List.

As a seller, a couple of things I've noticed about C-List is that:

Most folks immediately offer you less $ without even seeing the item. Lowballers rule on C-List.

They either want to meet you in 5 minutes (impulse buyers) or aren't really that interested (why bother mailing me then).

As a buyer, well:

Most people ask WAY too much for their "Rare, Vintage, 1994 Mint Fender Squier Strat".

Some folks like to post something, then go on vacation for 2 weeks - What the hell?!?!?

I see the same items posted again and again with a ridiculous asking price. Get a clue people - A 5 piece CB-700 kit with Sabian B8 *symbols* is NOT worth $500.00.

I've had mostly good dealings with eBay as both a buyer and seller. If a seller is unfamiliar with an item, you have to decide if you want to take the risk. I love the "I don't know anything about drums, but I'll do my best to describe the items" posts. They photograph everything but the badges, interiors, throws, etc... LOL!!

I've passed on several items because I didn't feel the seller really knew what they were selling, or it's true condition.

This probably doesn't help Ludwig-dude much, other than to say I feel your pain! Keep a stiff upper lip and forge ahead.

By the way, anyone here interested in my *RARE*, Vintage 2007 *MINT* Paiste PST-5 16" Crash Symbol? Only $150.00!! WOW!!!

[COLOR="DarkRed"]First off, no advance apologies necessary... We hear ya'.

That's weird that someone is flagging you when the items you are selling are different items. That doesn't happen to me on C'list here in NoCal.

My problem with C'list...and BigDaddy touches on it...is that it is generally perused either by idiots, cheapskates, or the like (just a bit of exaggeration here, BUT...)

It's great for liquidating and unloading mediocre or contemporary stuff, relatively fast. But indeed, folks who buy off of it are not knowledgeable vintage folks at all. I spend a lotta time answering Q's and sending pics to folks who never materialize to actually come TRY the drum or cymbal.

I have bought some great vintage stuff there for relatively nothing. But I rarely have sold anything of great value there even though I have listed the price as incredibly fair/bordering on the absurd.

Lastly...I can attest to the fact that given the economy, overall...NOBODY'S BUYING much these days. So if you are a seller, it's an extra BAD time on CL.

[COLOR="Navy"]Regarding eBay, it's obviously better given the range of knowledgeable prospective bidders.

The new rules don't bother me regarding how the sellers hands are tied. I actually think it's overboard, but I think it also stops the "revenge feedback" phenomenon, which needed to be stopped somehow. It's the better forum to sell good quality vintage stuff.

But, AGAIN, yeah mon.....the market values there have dropped considerably. In a lotta ways, I say hallelujah to that. Things were getting too nutz...it had to end ($3000 for a 22" K Zildjian ?...$800 for an RK snare ?....nope, sorry....)

To be honest guys, I'm done with both, never to return to either. I will tell you this, in these hard times I'm thinking of starting a resto service and maybe even custom builds of singles and kits of drums.....the Prez is supposed to make it easier for people to get small business loans and the like soon....part of the stimulous pkg.....so...maybe the dream will become a reality in the near future.....plus, I gotta get outta my day job soon....can't stand it anymore! Hey, if you can pull that off, then good for you. I too have thought about going into the resto biz. Would likely be part time for me though as I'm not exactly located in drum central (Boston is a 30 minute drive from here).

Would be a nice way to pick up some extra dough though and I have the space for a nice little workshop.

Jaye - You hit the nail on the head. I was trying to be nice, but your idiots and cheapskates comment is so true.

Example: I own and operate a recording studio on the side. Sometimes I sell off some older gear when I realize I'm not using it anymore. Recently, I posted a couple of things on C-List, one of which was a Yamaha Muti-Effects rack mount device.

It's worth around $50.00 - $75.00 in the real world. It's in good shape, never left the studio, etc... I had an asking price of $50.00 and figured I'd get $40.00. The first email I get is from some dingleberry stating "I really can't afford to spend $50.00 on a reverb right now - Will you take $20.00 for it?"

Um... NO!!!!
