Loading...

I've had/come across MANY kits in the last 5yrs..

I have this clutch / it came with a hihat that had a HEX center pole.

I don't remember which one...but I did have an old Star kit (67/68)

That comes to mind.?

Any input would be helpful...heres some pics..

Several of my Star-built kits have a hex rod, but none of my kits has a clutch exactly like yours.

My 71 or 72 Star set has a round barrel like yours but a fatter wing nut, more substantial. My Coronet kit that is a little later, like 74 has a hex shaped barrel, but has a wingnut that very closely matches yours. Obviously the wingnut could have been changed...

I think you're on the right track with your assumption.

I think it looks like a 60s Sonor clutch. But I am no expert on this, not by far...

Star had no hexagonal rods, as far as I remember.

I second Magnus_N's opinion -

Looks like a 1970's Sonor clutch with an aftermarket wingscrew replacing the original wingscrew tightener.

Well, here I go paddling upstream again...

Have to disagree. Star did make them like that. The picture is of my Star kit which came with the hardware (not the 2 added cymbal stands but with the kick pedal, hi hat and kick mounted cymbal arm) I didn't get it from a re-seller with a bunch of kits laying around and I seriously doubt it is a German stand.

It has a hex rod and the hole in the clutch is a hex shape too. Just checked it.

Picture isn't meant to show the clutch, just the hardware style I am referring to. Will try to do a picture later.

By the way, a couple of my other MIJ kits have hex rods but the clutches have round holes. As usual with MIJ, there is no hard fast rule that applies every time.

Me, too, now, Sir! ;)

I've owned exactly that hihat back in the 70's, bought brandnew and directly at a dealer, together with my Royal Star drumkit. It's the 'Hi-ace'-version with adjustable spring tension by turning the corrugated knurl at the bottom of the stand, just on top of the pedal. The pedal itself was linked to the rod with a strap made out of steel.

The simple explanation is: at yours, someone has replaced the original rod with this hexagonal one. Although I never faced problems with a slipping clutch, here someone must have decided that a hexagonal rod should work better. Replacement should have been easy, as the Sonor thread apparently is the same as the one from the bottom Star rod.

Furtheron I've just contacted a guy at the German Tama representation, having, experience with their drum line back to the Star days. He, too, can't remember that Star/ Tama ever used a hexagonal rod at any of the hihat stands.

Ralf

NB: the shape of the cymbal stands say that these ones appear to be Star-made, too.

Well, my first ever Hi Hat stand had the same hex rod and clutch.. It was a very cheap Tempo brand ( had not much money then, as now )... Made by Star..

Mmmmh ... Coffee Break2

If it's (too) really genuine, I've learned something very new today.
