Yamaha Recording Custom Hot Red

My first pro kit was a Yamaha RC 24/13/14/18 w/chrome 5x14 that I bought used at the end of 1984. I added a 10 & 12 and then later an 8. I was 20 when I got the kit and was in heaven. My tastes changed over time and 5 years later I ended up selling the kit and going to a 22/10/12/14/16 setup that I played for years before getting into vintage. Now I normally play 4 piece kits.

The drum shop near me got in a hot red YRC kit and it brought back so many memories that I started yearning for an RC kit again although a much smaller kit than I had before.

My toms were all power toms which I hate now so I went on a goal trying to find a standard sized tom to build a kit around or find a full set of standard sized drums!

Hot red was popular when power toms came in so this task was nearly impossible but somehow I was able to find a 9x13 within a few months. I then scored a full kit 22/10/12/16. Last came a matching 8x14, something I never had back then, a matching snare. I would've preferred a shallower snare but for now it works.

The 10x10 and 10x12 are both heading to Ebay so here's what I have right now a 22/13/16 w/ 8x14 all in hot red. My goal is to have a 24/13/16/18 w/ 6.5x14 but right now I'm stoked and can't wait to play it!

Wow great looking kit, I love yammies, especially RC's. I'd love to have a 10,12,14,16, 22 but I don't like the deep tom's either.

I was just leaving work dog tired after a horriblly hard week and got a look at the beauties. Wow is all I can say. The Lady in Red! Totally hot and classy! The snare I know would blow me away. I want some bad... Thanks.

Those are so very cool!

Quality Yamaha drums is the one kit I've never owned. I guess it's time to fix that. Your kit is an inspiration (can you hear my wallet groan?) :o

I REALLY like that color as well. Guess I had best start hunting... just how difficult is it to find standard sized toms in that wrap (or is it lacquer?)

It's paint. All Recording Custom drums are painted/ lacquered. Recording Standards were wrapped but red was not an option.

Standard sized toms are very hard to find in hot red as the power tom craze was in full swing at the time. Even the bass drum is power sized being a 16x22. I can live with that but had the bass drum sizes been 18" in depth I would have passed and still been hunting for a standard sized bass drum.

Black is probably the most common color and even those are difficult to find in standard sizes. White seems to be the easiest to find of all the colors.

Green is the rarest color and almost impossible to find. I've only seen two kits for sale and I've known of the color since 1984. Natural is one of the rarest colors to find as it had a very short run and was not that popular followed closely by Cobalt Blue.

Very nice kit! You can't beat the bright 80's colors. You might be able to get new red toms since the re-issued the color (also the bright yellow). Like the "natural" they never reissued the cobalt blue... The rarity is cool, but now I'm afraid to take them out of the house!

Like you, I never liked the power toms (mine are standard depth).

I just grabbed a be-bop kit,which has the 'hard' drums in standard depth (14X18 kick and 14X14 floor) but it has a 10X12 rack tom! It looks ridiculous on that little bass drum! But, I will say that tuned up with the Diplomat coated heads it came with, that 'big' tom rings like a little 8X12! I couldn't believe it!

I had an old single tom mount in my stuff and mounted the tom on that. It looks really trick that way, because you don't see the old style single tom mounts very often.

(still looks dumb however):p

I have been looking for a black 8X12 and have not had any luck. If you come across one, let me know! (I'd hate to buy a new one but the local music store would certainly like it...)

There's a member on here with an 18/12/14 kit in black for sale. I'm not sure if he still has it. I think his kit is 1982.

If I see a single black 8x12, I will let you know for sure.

I didn't see any today (not much Yamaha at all in fact) at the CT Drum show...

I did however see and hear a drop dead gorgeous gold sparkle 20-12-14 Gretch round badge kit. It looked and sounded so sweet... The price tag, which may be fair (I don't know for sure), was well out of my budget for the day...Mind Blowi

I have recently aquired one of these Power recording Custom Kits in Hot Red. 8 pieces!! Looks fantastic ...

The original kit was 22x16 Bass, 12x10 Tom, 13x11 Tom, 16x16 Floor Tom and matching hot red 14x5 1/2 Recording Custom snare.

The kit I have aquired also has the following all matching...

15x13 Tom, 15x12 Tom, 14x10 Tom

It sounds great but I'm not sure whether to keep it? Sell bits of it, or Sell it complete.

I have a DW and a Vintage Yamaha Maple Custom kit and really bought this on a whim but it looks and sounds so damn fine. Decisions, decisions

Hi! Pleased to meet you! Member DolFan54 turned me on to a standard sized kit in June (and thanks again, DF!). It's pretty amazing. I'm not normally a huge MIJ fan, but it was the color that I was looking for. Frankly these kits are well worth finding. It does NOT sound 'vintage', but does everything we play need too.
