Tama Super Maple - Superstar kit (Ready to Buy -Sanity/Price Check)

I have the store holding these while I post and get some advise. I have been looking for an 80's Tama Superstar kit because...well they were cool as heck when I was in jr high/high school back then. I ran across a really clean set of Super Maples in 8 and 10 concert toms, 12,13, and 16 toms, with a 22 " kick. The snare is the 6.5 x 14 with the large black cross on it. Not sure what the snare is but is sounds sexy as heck. All the toms (except concert) and the snare have built in mufflers. Serial number on the bass drum is 90730. I would guess these are 79's or 80's but I am not positive. Kit is clean and the asking price is $750 for shells and stands (no pies or cymbal stands except the original high-hat stand). They are firm on the price and wont budge a penny. I am willing to pay it if that is a fair rate. I have always wanted a Superstar kit from this era. Should I pick them up? My future is in your hands and the wrath of my wife Help2

Seems reasonable, so long as they are not power tom sizes. Great instruments!

Yeah, I've heard folks use 'square toms' and 'power toms' referencing the same thing.

csnow: I don't know much about Tama, but what I have heard and read indicate those are fine drums. Also, not being a fan of power toms, finding good drums in standard sizes from that era is great. I'd buy 'em if they were a wrap I liked, the condition was above average for the age and I was looking for 'em. That price seems fair...

After further investigation, I passed on them. The 13 and 14 didn't have the cross badge and you can see where the old concert tag was. These were originally concert toms that had bearing edges cut and lugs added. Considering I don't know who did the work, I am leery to take on someone else's modification. Not only that, being modified makes them worth about half that asking price (well at least to me).

They are worth half the asking price for an altered drum. That's the one thing you can't fake about those superstars is,even if you had some of what's called the "flying T" badges, they won't cover the rectangular badge of the concert toms. The original steel grommet would also be tough to find.

Just and FYI,but those super maple finish drums are 100% Japanese birch

There is NO maple in superstars, although it looks maple.it's just the name of the finish.

They also made caddy apple, piano black and piano white and super mahogany.

There were no apples, pianos of mahogany in any of those drums, just 100% Japanese birch.

Super maple IS the most desireable superstar color.

I traded a 7 piece Pearl Export and $50 for my (formerly)concert tom set, which I converted to double heads. 1982 13/14/15/18/24,but I only use the 13/18/24.Cherry wine with scratches and nicks, but the are AWESOME DRUMS!Burger Kin I really don't care about the collector value-did I mention they are AWESOME DRUMS!

I am not a collector. I am a player and go for the vintage sound and memories. However, these drums were modified so they didn't warrant the asking price. Had they been cheaper, I would have bought them and enjoyed them. Just thought I would clarify why I passed on them.

I actually added lower hardware to some of my 76 3-ply Ludwigs that were concert toms (6,8,10 and 12). They already had the lower bearing edges cut from Ludwig, so I figured I would finishwhat they failed to do.
