Sure you can find better sounding bongos. That's not relevant. They were your dad's. That's what matters! Treasure these instruments and think of your dad every time you look at them. To him, they were treasures. They should be to you as well! Brian

salty

I understand they were his dads, but still if he has plans of use They are not worth it, best hang them up as a memory of his dad. Know! Why should they be a treasure to me???? It's a treasure to him as a memory of his father not to me. And is relevant if he has plans of use the sound of a real bongo and a toy are to different things.

cuquito:

I agree with you 100% that there are better bongos on the market that would sound a lot better. These bongos are only meant as a momento, and not to you (check antecedent of pronoun). You are also correct in asserting that "the sound of a real bongo and a toy are 'to' different things."

Haven't read any current threads in a while - saw this one and just had to - especially once I got into it. Apparently he/those who thought these bongos were crap obviously have not discovered how old MIJ full size drum kits can sound awesome considering how that wood has dried and hardened for 40+ years and that head technology is so much better (not to mention how we all now know to get the edges recut if necessary).......

They can now sound much better than they ever did in the past, including when new.

This truth about vintage MIJ also applies to bongos.....

But hey....I guess it will be our little secret right???

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

That's an interesting - no, I'd better say: provoking - perception here in the VDF.

May I ask back: why are you then a member of this forum? There are more than plenty of modern drum forums out there.

I'm afraid that you haven't caught so far what's really behind 'vintage drums' and what it's all about them, Sir.

On-topic, @VistaBob, again:

You may check out my website concerning Apollo/ percussion/ Star on my website (see below).

As a professional drummer for 60+ years and today retired I consider Japanese drums toys. Yet they are vintage the true sound of a bongo is not achieved from these drums. As drum expert or Guru as they call you, You are crossing a line that you do not know about.Bongo were created for one thing and one thing only in Cuba, and that is Playing what is call son and they have a very distinctive sound. Those Japanese Bongos do not produce a tenth of a sound of what a bongos sounds like. So when you want to Talk bongos , timbales , congas and Trap sets of Quality and sound Contact Me, I will give you a lesson that you will not forget. Here You have what vintage bongos should look like These are over 100 years old a true and professional bongo true vintage. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10200776942456705&set=a.10200776941976693.1073741835.1557114875&type=3&src=https%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash4%2F481938_10200776942456705_1034292765_n.jpg&size=600%2C450/ https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4719504236358.2179771.1557114875&type=3 This is vintage Bongos

Right on, Mitch!!! I too still play with my old Stars. The members of my band like the sound and so do the people in the house. I have two sets of Star bongos which I don't use much. I do not consider them "crap"!!!

I've been playing professionally for 20 years, not retired, and I consider you to be wrong on this issue. In fact I'll be gigging this very night with my mix-match MIJ kit, which looks and sounds beautiful.I'd like to see you prove that with a sound clip comparison. Remember, the "real" bongoes have to be more than ten times better sounding than the MIJ - that is your unsupported claimMitch

Mitch This is a real bongo not these Japanese toys made by Apolo http://youtu.be/Er15X9-QZd4 Try a professional over these star's and apolo you will note big difference in sound.
