Another nice haul - Tama Imperial Star

Picked up this kit today. The owner's young daughter was using it to learn on and they've now "upgraded" to a newer Pearl. To be fair, these would have been comically big for a young, small drummer. They even intimidate me. Most of my kits have 20" BDs. This is a pretty modern kit for me, too.

I think it's late 70s and the sizes are 24/13/14/18 and 14x6.5 Kingbeat. All the hardware is original except for a later model Tama snare stand. The cherry on top was discovering that the hi hats are 15" Formula 602s and the small crash is a 15" 2002. The ride is a 22" Camber, so not so good.

The kit is dirty and was housing a few local spiders but the rims and hardware are rust free and the wrap is pretty tidy. The clean up has begun an I'll update as I go.

Beauty! My first "real" kit was an Imperialstar. It wasa 24/13/14/18 from the early 80s with those wonderfully huge power toms. I was 14 and it had sat in a local music shop 7-8 years (got it around 91 I guess). I sold it and was so heart broken that eventually I got a old Superstar to replace it.

I think if you put 1 of the toms on a snare stand to the side of the bass you'll be quite happy with it.

Wow, I love that color! Tama's(swingstars) were my first "new" drumset"..I lusted after the Imperialstars in the early 80's....I still remember my driver's License Road Test when I was 16..All my other friends were frantic and nervous. I spent the time waiting in the car drooling over the new Tama Catalog. I remember it like yesterday...

But for some reason, I can't remember to take the trash out on Wednesday's....weird

Good stories guys. My first "proper" kit was a Swingstar in the same color. They were pretty popular back then. I actually like that this is a bit earlier so not power tom dimensions. I have a lovely early 80s Pearl BLX kit with power toms that I've had since 92 but I think I would have always found it more comfortable to play with shallower toms.

I've finished refurbing the 3 toms and I'm going to get onto the BD today.

JD7 - TM stands for Trade Me which is the New Zealand equivalent of eBay.

Nice find Fayray! I see tons of Tama's here, all different grades, but most have power toms. Finding that vintage with standard shells is great!

Thanks and I agree. I much prefer the shallower toms despite playing power toms for many years. Still, this kit is going to feel too big for me now, I'm more used to my 20" Bd these days

well here she is all cleaned up. She is in remarkable condition and you could eat your dinner off it now. Just Ordered a Tama logo for the BD head.
