Unique Vintage Sonor Snare ?

Loading...

That was yesterday.

I'm sorry but I know style trumping substance when I see it. There is no evidence this is even a Sonor drum. It may be Sonor derived but if catalogue evidence can be shown to prove it , then I'll buy it as a Sonor. From the differences in lug measurements to the construction of the shell, the drum says more likely Trowa . If someone wants to call a drum made in a factory owned and operated by different owners, managers and called a different name , by the previous owners name , then you might as well call Leedy Ludwigs, just Leedy then, or how about calling Kent drums , Gretsch?

That's a good drum restoration, no better nor worse than many others but the way the whole schtick is packaged is designed as a wankfest for the restorer and much less to pay homage to the makers of the drum but then that is the modus operandi of this restorer. It is much more appropriate to pay homage and honour the original drummaker's art ,not fabricate history and turn the restoration of an old drum into some ego tripping drum sideshow.

We're talking about a guy who stamps his logo across the pages of catalogues, as though they are his property. What's his point ? If someone scans a page of a 1950 Sonor catalogue, designed and published by Johs. Link, they are violating his intellectual property rights, or some perverse notion? That's the same kind of thinking that is being used by BIG Gene-Mod. companies , in their claim for gene ownership. Find it, then stamp your name all over it. Whew!!

Those are his catalogs, they are the only one`s known to exist, and he put them on the site with full permission and thank you from it`s owner.

And the best part is,.......He`s got two of them, the other not cut down.

If you look at the red drum during restoration, you can see the old location of the strainer and damper in the same location as the clear finished one before it was cut.

On another post in the same forum, a member took a pic of another collectors drums on a shelf and asked henk about a teardrop snare on it. Henk quickly answered his question and then pointed out what I saw too. There where two more of these on the shelf in clear finish with the same strainer, one had a script logo badge and you couldn`t see the other one`s badge.

So we know of four of them. I`m afraid you suffer from the same thing you accuse henk of, not knowing a Sonor from a Trowa !i

of course, Sonor made these drums but the cutdown one doesn't exactly fit the mold , does it? The lugs are different and there should be evidence of it having carried a badge( that's an awfully new looking one on the varnished drum, don't you think?). It would be interesting to look inside the 2 shells and compare them. ...would be surprised ,if there weren't some noticeable differences.

There are metal one`s too. The oldest had the cigar lug and newer one`s had imperial with different hoops. Each year there were changes in the way the wires were attached The wood script one has different hoops too. Difficult to date when Sonor kept no records.

Here`s a hint as to why you wont find a trace of a badge on the cut one, remember, it`s lacquered. You knew about this badge too, don`t say you didn`!i

From OddBall

Have you ever seen a Trowa with that throw ?

The throwoff is Sonor.

The Henk's snare is nice job but it can be called as a some rebuilded conglomerate drum on motives "Sonor Orchestra 52" because an original is a throwoff only.

1. Orchestra snare haven't wood shell. This shell persistently remind me one of the Trowa kinds with internal throwoff or some Tromsa shells, or some Tacton after Lefima era and we can see undefined extra holes on this beech shell.

2. Orchestra snare haven't single flanged hoops.

3. Orchestra snare haven't Imperial lugs.

4. Orchestra snare haven't such a primitive muffler, but original is the long stange with parallelogram drop felt plate and fixed with two screws on the shell.

It seems to me that someone reassembled this snare before Dennis and Henk.

I'm not a great expert..., my vision, no more...

George.
