Wood Veneer

Loading...

I was wondering if anyone has used maple, birch or oak veneer as a re-wrap material? I have some old Sonor shells that may look good in oak. It's available at Home Depot for about1/3 the price of drum wrap. Anyone do this before? I have included a picture of a 6" wide sheet of oak and the Sonors.

Cheers!

does it have the paper backing? That is easier to work with than old school veneer. The paper backed stuff can almost be installed like a conventional wrap with contact cement.

You can also do a search for adhesive-paper-backed veneer...that stuff is very easy to work with. In the thread in the "How Much..." section tehre is a topic on Pearls '60's drums...I had some links there to adhesive-backed veneers.

The problem with doing it w/contact cement and no backing is...well, it's not a problem...it's just trickier because it has to be carefully done.

I would not use contact cement if the material you get does not have some sort of backing! Yellow glue (carpenters glue) or hide glue would be what you would use for veneer without a backing. I would have to go back to my school books to tell you why but there is a problem, I think it has to do with wood movement or maybe the glue telegraphing through the veneer.I have used the paper backed and contact cement without any problems.

Sounds like the paper backed is the way to go. Thanks!

My question also has to do with aesthetics, is veneer nicer than wrap in some cases? I saw some Beech vener on the site you recommended Jaye to maybe cover some Sonor Beech shells...What do you think?

Here's some photos of a Pearl Forum kit done in a birch veneer. Bought them this way, I did'nt do them, but I think they look pretty good.

Quickly became my main gigging kit, 18", 12", 14", have the 10" too.

Hi Gar,

That wrap is well done! The kit looks fantastic..and a nice jazz set-up.Cool1

I think I will go ahead with the Sonor shells in Beech, as that is the original shell wood.

In the photo are the bare bones Sonors (early 60's teardrops 20,16,12). I'm thinking Beech Veneer to "keep it natural" ? If it were not for thehresidual glues and the small but numerous bits of wood fiber that came off with wrap I would just finish them as is. Ideas?

Looking for your input?

Cheers!

Go for it. I agree that those shells are no longer great candidates for finishing natural. I have always liked the look of the backed-veneers...I have seen kits done with them and they look great. My only concern would be...I wonder how much "wet" they could take during the staining/finishing process without showing some ill signs (i.e. how much "soaking in" could the stuff do ?)

So it'd be a matter of choosing a finish product.

Order a sheet and try it on a tom first.
