Prep before re-wrap?

Here is my opinion.

Do not seal the drums, get them to raw wood. I have wrapped one set of drums using Delmar wrap. I did go with the tape method thinking once all the lugs are installed where could it go. My wrap was cut 3/8” less than the width of the shell so you don’t have to trim it. I actually found it difficult to tape one end and then keep the wrap tight while you get the other end bonded. When finished it seemed the wrap had some air pockets and when I went to drill the holes I was very concerned about shavings getting behind the wrap. It turned out fine, the lugs are holding the wrap but I would not do the tape method again. I would use the contact cement, that way the wrap is being bonded tightly to every square inch of the shell. And It is smart to have the wrap oversized because once those two surfaces meet there is no turning back, you cant start over.

Have fun!

Thank you!

His name is escaping me now, but I saw someone on here,( poppy I think)who used the tape AND contact adhesive.

I thought that was genius!

Even ludwig had problems with the seam lifting. Using tape at the ends and adhesive everywhere else you get to have your cake and eat it too.

Just a thought.

I'm looking at wrapping my old clubbies, with the wrap in the lap joint. What a nightmare.

Wait a minute! Are you saying to seal the wood as opposed to leaving it raw so the glue would not soak into the wood? Are you saying that too much of the glue will soak in and not be enough left between the shell and the wrap for adhesion? :confused:If this is the case should just do a coat of sanding sealer?Surely you don't want to take the time to put a real heavy finish on the shell before you wrap it, right?

Not exactly. If you seal the shell, it will take less glue to put the wrap on. The glue will soak into the wood on a raw shell. Not much, but enough that you may have to add a second coat to the shell. I throw a layer of sealer on there and have never had a problem.

It only took about half of a quart to wrap 5 shells; 10, 12, 14, 16 & 32

mac, check GN, I know you haven't been there in a while, but I'd ask there. In fact, Sooy just recommended another glue as well as sealing the shells before wrap.
