Rogers 380 Wet Sand Wrap Restoration

Loading...

Alright so I decided to take a deep breath and try the wet sand method to restore whatever funk is making the potentially beautiful wrap so dull and white on these Rogers 380's I picked up on the chicken farm the other day. I watched the 20 minute youtube video on wet sanding wraps you guys posted and now I am starting the project.

Day one:

I decided to start with the 12 inch rack tom. I stripped it of all the parts and was really impressed by the quality of the hardware. No not as good as American made vintage Rogers stuff but certainly a far cry from a normal Japanese stencil kit that is for sure. I was also excited to see that the interiors were really, really clean and the edges looked great!

Now onto the sanding. I decided to start with 400 grit paper to start the wet sanding because the 240 the guy used in the video scared me a bit even though he got great results starting with that course paper. I just went over the whole shell in the same direction for about 10 minutes. Wetting the paper often and never letting it dry. Here is a before pic of the worst panel on this drum:

And here it is after just a few minutes of wet sanding with 400:

A major improvement! And more importantly it has been sitting for a few hours now and none of the white funk has crept back in!

So now I have hope however I am not sold yet. Going to hit it for a few more minutes with the 400 then move up to 600 and finally 800 and 1200. I will post more pics as I move along!

Great! thanks for posting this. This will be a popular thread I am sure. It looks as though the sanding is going to improve the wrap. What kind of buffing compound will you use?

Thank you!

By the way, try a tiny bit of dish soap in the sanding water.

Thank you!

Agreed. I'll be very interested in seeing how this comes out. The results thus far look very promising. Are you hand sanding with paper, hand sanding with a block or using a power sander?

Morning everyone! Thanks for the comments. Not sure what rubbing compound I am going to buff with and I am totally open to suggestion. This is totally new territory for me as far as restorations go. I was thinking just a 3m car rubbing compound. As far as the sanding goes I just very gently hand sanded with a block. Not much pressure at all. More updates soon.

Now I am really becoming a believer!

Here is the 12 inch tom after after about a half hour of sanding. Almost all the white is gone!

I am in a holding pattern on the project because I am waiting on my local Ace Hardware to get in some 1500 grit Westsand. So I am probably going to started on the other drums and will be posting my progress soon!
