A guy in Vancouver is selling { on ebay.ca} an old beat up John Grey Broadway shell pack { no snare} , which is missing a few parts ,ie: bass hoop ,spurs, bottom tom hoop.rods and the worst part... the bass drum looks out of round in the front .. it seems.the seller, has had these up for sale on ebay on and off now for well over a year .{ go figure}../ my qestion is ......... Can you still find any parts for these drums?? .and really are they worth the time and effort to bother....any ideas , they are still listed on ebay... anybody know, what these really are worth, if much at all ??....although... I do like the color, it appears it might be cost prohibitive to try to fix these up
John Grey Broadway drum value
You would have to get them real cheap by the sounds of them to be worth the trouble. Unless you,re a big fan of those shells, i,d pass, there is SO MUCH gear available now
more details are necessary, in order to evaluate such an offer. the drums could be worth it, or not. John Grey used odd sized shells for part of their history, so finding a hoop might be difficult. ditto for heads. .....that said, John Grey are very good drums and if the sizes were right , it could be the basis for a really nice kit. snares are available ,fairly regularly.
I looked at the ad, and i,d say its a roll of the dice. I love British drums but finding replacement parts could run you more than the asking price. I know its tempting but i had to learn the hard way that there will alway be another bus along shortly...good luck.
I've got a '30s John Grey Broadway snare and it's a very nice drum. No problems with heads, and it sounds great. As said before, we need more info.
Good luck.
Stephen

My first kit, in 1958, at the age of 11 was Broadway - the cheapest, nastiest budget brand in the UK, and I doubt it ever rose any further up the pecking order. I'm now in my late 60's, and have yet to meet a single serious drummer playing them.
They did, however, sell beautifully varnished sticks ....
Other than as a novelty, I would steer well clear. I doubt they would have any value whatsoever.
Have a look on eBay UK:

It just confirms my suspicions, that, these old Broadway drums are not really worth very much. even when in decent shape

If I recall, Broadway ,mostly had single head toms , although I also have seen some that are pretty much the same as Autocrat( which were top line drums). It made them seem pretty chintzy. What John Grey did do however, that was almost totally unique( only Ajax matched this) , was use cast hoops on their budget drums. It turned the 6 lug Broadway snare drums into something a little special. Ajax went one step further in offering an 8 lug budget drum with cast hoops. If I could find a Broadway 14" double headed floor tom, I would snap it up in an instant.
