The Ludwig Black Panther Info Thread...
Yeah it was loud, did you see the look on Lu Lu's face! Did you catch that Beatles riff in " Hey Joe ". Cool video.
Anybody check out the Hendrix at Woodstock double DVD yet? Gotta see the second dvd as its a college student taping this onstage! Its in black and white, but there's quite a bit that shows what Mitch is playing during the set that you don't see in the ain movie. Rather cool!
Most Vinyl car tops back in the 70's were what we in the auto trim business call a Levant grain. It isnt at all like the Black Panther Wrap, however it is almost identical to what Fender covers their amps out of.
The wrap was applied like a normal wrap because it couldn't take the heat like a normal thick pvc wrap could. It was applied after the shell was formed. The panther wrap is vinyl so there wouldn't be a need for another layer of vinyl under it. And as far as I know, it was not the same as what Chrysler used. Vinyl roofs are generally a thicker material and have some sort of padding bonded to the back of the material, so I would be hard pressed to believe that it was the exact same material. It may have a similar grain pattern, but thats probably about it.

There is a guy on drumforum.org with a citrus set that he restored. The original finish was black panther and he has the before pics to prove it. He did a killer job and the set looks incredible! I have also seen a few drums on e-bay where the seller tore back a small bit of the black panther to show citrus mod. I would be cool to know how many times they did this. I think black panther is a pretty cool color.

None of mine have Orange Mod underneath, but I don't care. Black Panther is a cool color all its own and that's why I love it so. ;)
I recently bought a 1969 Super Classic in Back Panther finish for restoration. The kit was rather abused so it was not necessary for me to peel back any portion of the covering - several places on the bass drum were already peeled back. And no, there is no other finish under it; just some indifferent-looking wood. But it glued back neatly and the kit is starting to look really good - I give it a shine every now and then with black boot polish.
Mitch's bass drums on his were pretty shallow, 24x12"s?
