Yeah, I'm keeping the wrap on. Going to get some black Ambassador heads for the batter side and leave the clear Rocker heads on the bottom.

I'm not so much the drummer. ;) But my son is and he likes them. He did say, "How can you not play Zeppelin on these drums!".

In fact, he scared the c*rp out of me with them. The drums are in the back room of our house, I was in the backyard and the window was open. He snuck behind the kit and started playing "When the Levee Breaks." I nearly jumped out of my skin. They are loud!

To answer your question, they sound really good. :D

Rocker drums will NOT make a good set to stain,( unless you veneer them like jccabinets did with his set) rockers as i understand it, were factory seconds shells that had undesirable wood grain or discoloration that made them not suitable for stain or lacquer. So they were wrapped and coated inside.

I have a set that I may end up re wrapping because they are starting to bubble. And wrap for a 7pc is a lot of money. Not to mention the work.

I've decided to NOT remove the wrap from these drums. I don't know what I was thinking. DOH They just need a good cleaning/detailing. As I mentioned earlier, I think the wrap is White Frost and it has a pearl look depending on the lighting and the angle you look at the kit. So the wrap is staying.

You have a nice Rocker II Series 7 kit. Based on the catalog, it's Silver Smoke. All all of the drums bubbling? I wonder if the same wrap is still available?

It's mainly just the 12 and 16 bubbling, it didn't help that I found them sitting in the sun all day at a yard sale. So far I have not seen the wrap available from jammin Sam or precision. If I were to re wrap I'd use sparkle silver.

By the way I never realized it was called a series 7, I used to fall asleep staring at that flyer when I was a kid, always wanted the power plus 9 piece. My set had the rocker hardware originally and had no snare when I got it, I opted for the 6.5" and modular hardware also swapped to modern spurs.

Tim - those 4 and 6 ply shells that Ludwig made back then are some of the most resonant and really great sounding shells that the company ever manufactured. I had a 6-ply kit from that time period and they sounded drop-dead killer. Brother Kevin here at VDF has them now. Just clean them up as best you can and then as you said... let the beating begin! lol

I disassembled the kit and bagged the parts yesterday, which took about 45 minutes. If only the clean up took that long. DOH

I found a stamp on the inside of the shells that reads "889" or "688". I'm guessing it's a date stamp of either August 1989 or June of 1988.

There are a lot of parts to clean for this kit. To date, all of my refurbs have been single snares or 3 piece kits (20/12/14). This one's going to take some time. Crybaby Good thing it's not that dirty and the chrome just has grime and not pitting. I verified the toms are 4-ply and the bass is 6-ply.

It is interesting, but not special, that it's a mixture of the Rocker and Rocker II series, but that's Ludwig for you. Keep the line moving and use whatever parts you can find.

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a Ludwig drum kit but the guy doesn't know anything about it and i'm trying to figure out if it is worth the 250€. The guy only knows it's from the 1980's.

According to what is said in a thread I found on this site it might be a Rocker kit (shells with clear laquer inside, classic lugs, solid bass drums spurs) but the tom holder doesn't look like the ones on the pictures in the thread.

So is it the Taiwan version made after 1994 with the pearl type holders? Despite the fact the guy said it was from the 1980's... and I guess it is not worth it.

Or is it a USA Ludwig ?

1. Drum Shell Material -- Wood
