Early 90's Ludwig classics-Restored

Loading...

Ok, heres a couple of pics of one of my kits I inherited from my dad. Its now restored to its original type finish after many years of gigging. Story goes, they were originally WMP, some years later the finish split and cracked, Ludwig refused to help him out at all, so he had them "professionally" recovered using a generic white pearl as the original Ludwig style was no longer available. Well over the next 10 or so years of gigging, they yellowed a lot and well.....started cracking again. Dad was well known for leaving his gear in the van for extended periods of time.....many hot, cold cycles....not good for the finish to say the least.

Anyway, I found a pic of what they looked like when he first got them (they still had the silver dot heads on them!) a pic of what they looked like when I got them, and what they look like all restored to the proper WMP finish as of a couple of months ago. When I got them I couldn't get them to sound good, and I didn't care for the finish either. I was very close to selling them, but now I'm glad I didn't. They now have new Aquarian heads on them, the finish is great and they sound amazing! I can see why he traded in his black panther ludwigs, but I wish he kept both of those sets too!

Good to see the Marine Pearl pattern back....something about 'em just looked WRONG with the random vintage WMP stuff....I mean, that old pattern with that hardware...just looked off....

I was hard pressed to keep them until I found out Precision drum was offering the original style WMP again.....once I found the old pic and got the sample of the new....I just had to restore them to the way they were when new. Much better looking with the correct WMP I think. And with new Aquarian heads on them they sound killer! I gotta tell you though, that the heads were a tight fit on the toms for some reason. I called Aquarian about it and got Roy Burns himself! He told me its a common issue they have from time to time on Ludwigs of this era.....then he sent me another set at no charge! They were still on the tight side, but better than the first set. Think the next heads that go on it though might be either Remo's vintage A's or the new vintage emperors......

Aquarian heads are the narrowest diameter hoop rings of any major mfr....I love the heads, but have found I cannot use 'em for about 75% of my renovations/re-wrap jobs.

I mean, that WMP is pretty thin stuff...it's not like using a glass glitter which is heacka thick...so, really there shouldn't have been a problem fitting a new head. But again, Aq's are just fvery unforgiving in their fit and their ability to flex with the shell just a wee tad....

Exactly.....thats why when these wear out I think I'm going back to Remo. They just seem to fit better. Why Aquarian's regular heads are a tight fit is beyond me, not like they are vintage 50's shells that need their American Vintage series heads.....even Roy Burns himself told me its sometimes a problem, but only with Ludwig......makes me wonder why they don't do something about it like make the hoop a thinner inside diameter....

Nice. Here's the kit that I'm saying goodbye to as we speak (type). The shells are up on ebay right now. I will miss them...but, the new shells should be pretty sweet, too. I had the modular hardware with this one. This one was a 1981 and now it will be nothing more than a memory. Just not as hazy as my other memories of 81.

You're gonna regret getting rid of those...you do realize this don't you?

yupsuredo. I've owned many, many kits through the years. I miss only one. The others were enjoyed and remembered fondly. The one I miss is the one I'm getting back. That's why these shells are being sold. I'm getting an older Ludwig that is similar to the one I've been thinking about all these years. I'll still get more kits, but I'll have that one special kit back. That's the life of the drummer. Kits come and go, but very few hold on.
