I used this to strip, I used just about four quarts. I wanted to keep the original stain. I used 0000 steel wool to loosen and rags to wipe off. We cleaned EVERY peice of chrome with vinegar and a toothbrush. Still have parts to get:

lug for tom mount (14" & 15")

New heads all around

kick pedal

high hat stand

and more...

and yes,,,cymbals!

I used this to polish. 2 coats. The refinisher left just enough lacquer.

Nice work! These really turned out great.

I can relate to your efforts . . .

I spent most of the weekend muscling around an old Slingerland 8 x 12 tom that I am trying to integrate into a vintage 4 piece set I bought last month.

When I removed the wrap, I was confronted with this nasty reddish glue. It wouldn't sand off, so I also went the route of using paint and varnish stipper. That loosened it up and I was able to get down to the bare shell which was in pretty nice shape.

My big problem came in trying to strip the shell interior. It had been painted white on top of the standard Slingerland "chocolate milk" paint. However, underneath that was a coat of torquois colored paint and then a black primer paint or stain.

I got everything except some remnants of the stain to come off and then re-painted the inside with a pretty good match for the "chocolate milk" interior so this drum will match the rest of my kit.

Anyway - this was WAY more involved than I thought it would be but, in all honesty, it was fun. Now I need to find a matching wrap (not easy for a late 60's Dark Blue Sparkle Pearl) and then I can start reassembling with all of the spare parts I have acquired.

I'll post some pics along the way.

For future reference...acetone is what most drum refinishers use to remove old wrap glue. That and a really good scraping knife.

It gets off about 75% of the glue and after a few hours of sitting, it loosens what's left so you can sand the remaining off.

It is a bear of a job though...unfortunately there's no way around that aspect.
