'65 Hollywood with 13" toms?

Loading...

Had this in the restore section, probably the wrong area, a bit ago, was still wondering about this:

Hey folks, I just picked up a set of '65 Ludwigs, which I'm guessing are Hollywood's, but there are two 13" drums, NOT two 12" drums as seen in the catalogs. Anyone know what the deal would be with these? Is this a rarity, custom order or what? The numbers are

13 x 9: 145433

13x 9: 147831

16x16: 145468

14x22: 145969

If it turns out this isn't anything special, I have my eye on a matching 12" tom from '67. Would this make this kit more valuable, other than the obvious playability? I'll only use one tom anyway, so doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me, just wondering from an eventual resale/trade standpoint. Here's some pics:

it almost make me wonder if that kit wasnt special ordered that way due to the serial numbers being so close. youre right in that it should have been two 12s .the first generation of 12's had the dual clip mount with the wood block. the second generation 12's which debuted in mid 65 had a different style bulkier mount but the toms had the more conventional style mounts like most we see.

i think i would simply use the dual 13's and tune them in step properly just like the 12's would have been.

neat kit.

I agree. The numbers certainly indicate a matched kit. I would leave it the way it is. The badge numbers will "prove" its validity as a matched kit.

Tell me, do the badges face "out" (towards the audience) on both 13" toms? If so, then that's, for sure, an indication of a special-ordered kit.

Nice drums!

O-lugs, they sure do face outwards (assembled opposite each other). Good question! I'll get some pics up when they're all cleaned up. They sound great already!

Thanks again,
